Early Colt AR-15 valuation

Well, I got a partial answer on my early question as to the mfg. date of this, now about value? I am thinking of selling it- I had bought it originally to shoot, but it just looks too pristine. I don't have the box or papers for it- what is a fair asking price for one in this condition? A local shop has a 1972 vintage one that they want $1595 for.
The one I have is serial# 03848.
I haven't sold a gun in quite a while- what is the best venue today (SGN,Gun List, the 'web, etc.) for doing this?

    First, the serial # you gave us is incomplete; the Colt AR-15 has a 2-letter prefix. Second, you need to give us the exact model; I assume that you have an SP1, but, if you plan to sell a gun, you need to identify it EXACTLY.

    Finally, "for sale" listings, either online or in print, are not helpful, as many asking prices are just wishful thinking; you need to know what people actually PAID in order to get an accurate market value. For that information, go to the GB main page & do a search for your gun on the completed auctions. Similar information can be obtained from other online auction sites.

    Personally, I have found that the online auctions are the best venue for selling guns today. Look at GB; you don't pay a cent unless your gun sells. HOWEVER, you must give a detailed description & post high quality photos in order to get a fair price.

    Thanks. It is indeed an "SP1". Marked SER SP 03848. Magazine is marked "Armalite AR-15" Cal .223 Pats Pending and "Colt Pt. Firearms Mfg. Co, Hartford CT, USA (as is the gun itself).
    Three prong flash hider, moveable butt swivel (neither it or the front one have any sort of plastic coating), solid buttstock with no trap. Barrel not marked "chromed" as was the 1975 vintage one I once had.
    Other than I don't have the box and papers, looks like new.

    Manufactured in 1965, so it is an EARLY AR15. If it is all original, in 95% plus condition, with NO box or papers, right NOW it hits me around $1200-1500, give or take a touch.

    I am basing this off auction SALES here on GB, and what I have actually paid for early preban Colts within the last two months. For example, I bought an early Colt AR-15 SP1 CAR, minty original weapon for 1225.00. While yours is not a CAR, it gleans it's value from it's early production date. However, the market is tough to get a good grip on because of the potential sunset of the AWB. These will be desireable no matter what the ban does, but the exact dollar figure to pay for one AT THIS MOMENT is one open for debate.
