tell me the difference between c&r and ffl

Someone told me that i can do a lot of things with guns by purchasing a c&r license instead of an ffl and save quite a bit of money for the cost of the license. Can someone advise me so i don't have to talk to b.a.t.f. (yuck)

    Either way, you have to deal with the BAT-men.

    A C&R license is a FFL, but one issued for an individual, NOT A DEALER, to receive firearms in interstate commerce that are declared Curios and Relics. There is a humongous list of eligible guns, but in general, anything over 50 years old is good.

    A C&R license is a license to collect, not to do business, so don't go ordering guns for others.

    A regular FFL is a license to do business, and you have to actually be in the business to have one.

    can i ship qualifing c&r guns via usps like a regular ffl holder can?

    You cant ship or sell to anyone with a c&r. You can only collect for yourself. Otherwise you would be in that felony zone. You can have them shipped directly to you as long as it qualifies as a c&r gun.

    USPS will accept long guns for shipment from a C & R holder just as it will for an unlicensed person. The prohibition of shipment is for handguns.

    calamitykim, Try to conceal the attitude toward BATFE that you have shown in your original post if you have to deal with BATFE. In my dealings with the regulatory agents, the ones that handle licensing, I have found them to be courteous and professional. From posts I have read, I take it that others have had different experience than mine.

    my attitude toward the b.a.t.f. has nothing to do with the people working there only the bureaucratic red tape associated with getting done what i want done. i see no reason to conceal my distaste for jumping through hoops.

    You can NOT ship handguns through the US Mails, only licensed firearms dealers may do this. You can however ship longs via USPS, but non FFL holders may also do this. As a C&R holder you are allowed to purchase and ship C&R firearms in interstate commerce and you may buy and sell C&R firearms freely with other C&R license holders, as long as you comply with your home state laws-- which vary widely. You may not however act as a dealer in ANY type of firearm...this is where most folks get into trouble.

    I don't know where you got the idea that you can't ship or sell to anyone with a C&R FFL. It is not true. You can sell to anyone you wish as long as you are not engaging in a business. It is perfectly legal to sell in order to enhance your collection.

    A C&R license allow one to sell to an out of state buyer, provided that buyer comes to your house or other site of your collection, to effect the transaction face to face. You may sell to in state buyers per the laws of your state if that is legal in your state. You quickly get into the gray area of "dealing" if there are very many such transactions of items purchased under your license.
