tarnish ? removal from nickel plate

I have a winchester cowboy commemorative that is nickel plated, gor it from my dad who is not real whippy about caring for the weapons beauty. Anyway, it seems to have some kind of tarnish, dulling the finish. I'm not sure it isn't fingerprints from handling the gun over the years. How do I get this crap off and get it polished up like new?

    Flitz metal polish. It is not abrasive and will not harm blueing or plating. Your gun shop should be able to get it for you.

    Nevr-Dul metal polishing wool works great as does Flitz. One thing I can say for sure is be careful about using Hoppes or any other solvents that have copper reducing components that will slowly attack the base materials of the nickel plating. I use WD-40 only on any gun that is plated. Good luck....

    I've never tried this trick with a nickel-plated firearm, but the pickups on my electric guitar are nickel plated, and I used a little glove made from jeweler's cloth, which my wife bought to polish her silver coffee service. It's impregnated with a very mild abrasive cleaner intended for silver, and it does a great job of removing light tarnish, finger prints and the like. From my guitar, anyway.     I think Flitz is the best cleaner/polish on the market. I agree with the caution on using Hoppes on plated surfaces.The plating on these Winchesters is thin at best, so please avoid anything abrasive.Those red polishing cloths are imbedded with Jewelers Rouge,and while fine for siverware and heavy plate, I wouldn't feel comfortable using one in this case.Flitz is available from
