Question for M1 Garand experts

I'm wanting to buy an M1 Garand. I'm wanting a shooter but not a reproduction. It doesn't have to have documentation it hit the beach on D-Day, if you know what I mean, but I do want a USGI model.

I'm not a gunsmith and know nothing about repairing firearms other than keeping them clean.

I've looked at the CMP website and joined the GCA in order to learn more and qualify to buy one from the government. I've also seen a website where a man posted his experience in buying two Garands from the CMP. One of the Garands he bought was in excellant condition and the other wasn't so good. The CMP did send him a new stock for the other one though. The CMP charges $500.00 for their Garands.

I've also looked at www.garandguy.com
I can buy one from there for $795.00, with a one year warranty. Tony Giacobbe, in NJ, is the garand guy. Do any of you know him and/or anything about his garands?

What's the advise from you Garand experts. Do I spend $500.00 and buy one from the CMP, or $795.00 and buy one from Mr. Giacobbe?

    Tony Giacobbe is one of the dealers who I trust; you can be sure that any rifle he sends you will have been carefully inspected & will be in the condition he describes. If you weren't eligible to buy an M1 from CMP, I'd suggest that you consider him.

    But, since you ARE eligible to buy from CMP, that has to be the best choice for you. Many of their rifles are unfired since arsenal rebuild. On the off-chance that you get a beat-up rifle, you can always send it back to them & they will send you another, replace parts you are unhappy with, or give you a refund. Whatever you get from them will be worth at least $500, maybe more.

    Check around your local gunshops or a gunshow in your area. Pick up and inspect ( and even take it apart ) the desired Garand.

    GO WITH THE CMP, RACK GRADE = $400, SERVICE GRADE = $500 EITHER ARE WORTH THE MONEY, I JUST GOT 2-RACK GRADES (IHC & H&R) BOTH HAD ORIGINAL BARRELS AND ARE VERY SHOOTABLE. STOCKS NEED A REFINISH BUT THATS OK AS THE WINTERS ARE PRETTY LONG UP HERE.

    I've decided to get one from the CMP, and sent off for it today. I'll let ya'll know when it arrives. I'm sure I'll have tons more questions then.
