The .22 rimfire was developed by Smith & Wesson about 1857, so I would include it. For the other cartridge I would nominate the .38-55 Ballard. So, the line up would look like this: .22 rimfire, .38-55 Ballard and the .45-70 Government.

Iroquois Scout- I read that Rowland White first thought up the .22lr and the bored thru cylinder design, and sold the rights to Smith and Wesson. If I recall correctly it was even shown on a History Channel episode of Tails of the Gun.

    I'd say the .45-70.

I think you are right about 30-30. If I was going to suggest anything else that was generally discussed, I would have to throw in 12 gauge. When I was growing up, those were the things I would hear. The only other thing, was 38 Special. There were so many cartridges in the 1800's that I think that the region of the country would have made a big difference. I would throw in 32-20 and 38-55.
