Help from .270 or 7 mm fans for elk!!
I know its all about shot placement, but I have a chance to get a great deal (- 20% and - $100.00) for a limited time on a new .270 or a 7 mm but really want an .06 (which are out of stock). Im hunting elk and mulies. Someone sell me on one!!!

I would suggest you hold out for the 06. There is no better caliber for elk. The .270 will do the job, but they are big and tough and if your shot placement is not correct, even the -06 will take more than one shot.

I would say just the opposite. I really like the .270win. I think that it will do just as good of a job as a .30-06. I also think that shot placement is necessary just the same for the 06 as for the 270. I think if you don't really wanna worry about shot placement then you should change over to something more like a claymore mine or a mortor. 0 -
The .30-06spr is a very versitile cartridge, probably more so than the .270. But I really think that you'll like the .270 once you get it. 0 -
I also would hold out for the '06-better selection of bullet weights especially in the heavier range.

I'd say go look at your choice of rounds for each caliber and compare the downrange energy they supply. The winchester and federal cartridge web pages have all of their ballistics on the web. I just took a quick peek at winchester, and it looks like you can get around 1900 ft lbs at 300 yds with the -06 and around 1450 ft lbs at 300 yds with the 270. Decide how much energy you need and that will tell if the 270 is enough gun. The downrange energy and bullet expansion is what kills the animal when the bullet is put in the right place. 0 -
Your profile says you're from Montana. If that's the case, hold out for a 7mm mag. minimum. When we started going to Montana for elk, we were told by our buddys that lived there at the time to bring 7mm, as many shots are long and the deer and elk are huge! We did. We weren't sorry. [8D] 0 -
I really don't think that expansion is what kills the animal. From what I understand its putting a whole thru a vital organ causing the animal to either bleed to death, loose blood from the brain, or drown on its own blood in the lungs that kills the animal. Sure controlled expansion will probably help, but thats all up to bullet design. I believe that the .270win has plenty of energy for dropping an elk within its limits. I would personally recommend a .338cal, or even a .35cal myself, but the .270win will most definately do. 0 -
Wizard 78 - they have a 7 mm there also!!! Just think thats too much, I do want some meat left after I shoot it, but haven't really had much experience with the 7 mm. 0 -
7mm has similar recoil to -06. Smaller but faster bullet. It essentially substitutes speed for mass. Does a lot of good on the down range end, but with much less bullet selection. I shoot a 7mm, but think the -06 is the top choice. The .270 will indeed do the job, but the 06 is more versitle.

IMHO the 06 and 7mm mag are closer in performance then the 270 and 06 due to bullet slection. But I have a soft spot for the old 06 [;)] hold out for one you wont be sorry [:D]

You can get a 160 gr bullet for a 270, which should be plenty..
And besides.. the 270 is the best gun ever...
