What would a Colt Frontier Six Shooter .44-40 in good condition go for these days? Great site BTW, 1st post here:D

Your double action Colt is a model 1878 "Frontier". Manufactured from 1878 to 1905. This model in .44-40 was called the Colt Frontier Six Shooter.

Blue Book values:

98% - $4,750
95% - $3,750
90% - $3,000
80% - $2,500

I sure wish that everybody who would like a gun identified or valued would send in such beautifully detailed photos as you did. You made it easy for us.

This Colt belonged to my Grandfather who passed it to me and my father. Thank you for all the input so far, no problem on the photos. I figured I'd take a few pics to help you folks see what I'm talking about. I have only seen a few examples of the grip that I have on this .44-40. With what you guys are recommending I will get a letter of authentication. This is really exciting to learn all this about the ol' Colt we have sitting here. I hope to find out more. Thanks to all that have responded, and thanks Knox for such a detailed post,

Can't be sure from the photos but it looks reblued. If so the value is much reduced. Before spending the money on a Colt letter, I would find out for sure the finish is original, not a reblue.

Also, if it's still in good working condition, I wouldn't shoot it much. The lockwork on the early Colt double action revolvers has a reputation of being somewhat fragile....and repair parts are impossible to get.

From the Blue Book:

"This model is commonly encountered with a broken mechanism. Since original parts are scarce, at least $500 must be deducted for a non-working action."

The gun certainly looks like a non-factory reblue to me, which cuts it value substantially, probably to the $500 range, although I am always amazed by what some pay for non-original guns, either out of ignorance or a predisposition for "new" looking guns without regard to collector value. A factory letter would be a good investment for any collector-class Colt.
