Will heating up the front site mess up the finish?

When I was trying to take out the roll pin it was covered with the black finish. I had to chizel some out before I could get to the roll pin itself. Could that have something to do with it?

    I would not heat the front sight tower, it may end up discoloring the finish permanently.

    If the gas tube pin hole is fouled with something, I would use a very small drill bit, by hand, to clean it out so you can get to the pin.

    SK...As far as i know it won't, unless maybe it's cherry red! My boys have had mine hot enough to make the gun oil smoke off the barrel and blister my finger. 5 shot clips after that!Just get it warm enough that you can't hold your finger on it. When you hit the tube with the cold spray it should shrink it just enough to pop loose.Thats only if the pin hole isn't burred. Do you really need to pull it that far apart? Sometimes the best advice is ; if it ain't broke,don't fix it! A good tight fit is better than a loose one. Be careful not to bugger up the end that fits in the key on the bolt or you will have cycling problems.

    i may be wrong, but if i remember correctly pins go in and out one way. they have a very slight bevel to keep them 'put,' once in. look at the schematic. wherever the pin is shown entering the diagram is the way it should come out too. you know...those little dash lines showing it going into a hole? guys? am i just imagining things?

    BOB may be right. Some do, some don't. Usually roll pins go either way and on the AR i can't remember which it is. Roll pins use a spring type effect that holds them in place. Look at the pin to see if one end is swaged down.

    The general rule is to remove all pins from left to right. Install , right to left.
