Ar-15 target, varmint type upper info please
Im looking for a target, varmint flattop upper for my Pre-ban Colt AR-15. I have the large hole lower reciever. I would want it to be capable of 1 MOA accuracy or better.I dont need flashhiders or bayo lugs or front sight. I would want to use my Colt bolt and carrier if possible. Finally I dont care about color matching the upper and lower. There seem to be a million of these available now. Bushmaster uppers with Bushmaster barrels, RRA uppers with one inch thick Wilson stainless barrels. Armalite uppers with one inch thick barrels, DPMS etc. I would want reliability first and then lower cost. What would you pick for these requirements and what would you expect to pay for it? Are there bad ones out there to watch out for? Thanks

The first consideration is what weight bullets you want to shoot which would be determined by your maxium range to shoot. anything over 300 yds. I would opt for the 1-7" twist with a 77-80 gr. bullet some of the varmint uppers are 1-9 or higher which means light bullets and lower b.c.'s and more wnd problems. 0 -
Hello GPWEAPON, I would be shooting 55 gr. bullets. Thanks 0 -
I would go with RRA. Best deal for the money, and accuracy to boot.

well steve you should be able to use any of the twist rates available with that bullet, I know bushmaster has a good rep I would opt for the free float handguard I think bushy has uppers without the bolt and charge handle. there is an adj. pin for the frount and a rubber wedge that goes in the back to tighten up the lower for the accuracy your looking for. 0 -
Thanks for the help everybody! 0 -
There are a couple of 24inch uppers here on gunbroker. One is 1/7 twist, the other is 1/12 twist. I like 55 grain, so I would go with the 1/12 twist 0 -
You can get a Armalite M15A4(T)barrel/receiver kit constisting of complete upper minus bolt carrier group and charging handle assy. for $480. This consist of a 24" SS HB w 1:8 twist, picatinny rail and NM fiberglass handguard tube. You can also get the standard A4 20" flattop bbl/rcvr kit with out "recoil check" for $380. You could either send you bolt group in to Armalite or have a local smith check the headspace, but this is usually not a problem with the .223
