I dont think they were ever banned completely.I know the full auto's were and I think all that was banned after that was the heat shield and mag capacity.As far as I know they just went out of business due to lawsuits.

let me try. the ban began in 1994.the general public thought it was a ban on automatics when it was more a ban on clip capacities.pre'94 guns can legally have a"high capicity"clip while post'94 guns can't.How did i do??[^]

I don't know the history of the company. But I do know that they had a lot of problems because the guns were so easily converted to fully auto. Probably why it was the weapon of choice for the two boys at Columbine High School.

Yes it did your Ab-10 is basically a post-ban Tec-9 or DC-9. The only real differance is it lost the treaded barrel. I don't know if it lost the barrel shroud or not but all of the AB-10's I've seen didn't have them, but some of the DC-9's didn't either. I've had both DC and AB side by side and threaded barrel and and the shroud was the only differance I've notice inside and out. I don't know what the laws are in your state but in IN you can use high cap mag in either one. As far as I know AB-10's are no longer made and the price seems to be going up on them.

thanks lanlesnee. do you, or anyone, know if the ban was on the manufacture of the gun or just the high cap mag...what is considered a high cap mag? I have two 30 round clips and could have purchased a 50 round when I bought the gun. Also, is it a fed ban or does it vary state to state?

Hi-cap mags per the 1994 crime bill is 10 rounds. As far as I know it is legal to put these in post ban guns all day long - as long as certian other "assault" features aren't introduced with it.

Some states do have permanate magazine restrictions - meaning that the mags can't be sold to that state. Most places now have the high-cap mags "grandfathered" where they are legal to own, but not to manufacture for civilian use. Eventually (they hope) they'll wear out and we'll be down the mandatory 10 round mags.

Hopefully that's enough info to get ya buy, if not you might do a search under members for Mark Christian. He's a FFL dealer and has thoroughly covered the topic of magazines and assault features countless times...

Thanks for the info. Is Intratec completely out of business now? The value of my ab-10 seems to at least doubled from what I payed for it. I just wondered if that was the reason. Thanks again.

I don't think they're completely out of business, but last I hear a Califonia court rule in 1999 that the company could be held responsible for a 1993 mass shooting in San Fancisco. I think the fact that it was a cheap high capacity threaded barrel gun that resisted fingerprints, and believe it or not that's how it was advertised, is what done it in.

Intratec went out of business, Jan 2001. Was anounnced in Miami newspaper during that time. Paper said they were having liablity problems.
Well known for cracking frames. Also breaking firing pins and bolt handles, (due to dry firing). We get lots of call for these
parts.
Most aftermarket magazine have to be reworked to fit properly.

There is a shop in town that gets a regular supply of AB-10's from a distributor every few weeks (firearms do last in the distributor systyems for years after business's close). Hasen't had these for several weeks, but was selling for around $239.00

I've parted out both pre-ban and post-ban guns, and for the most, the parts are interchangeable. There are a few that are slightly different, one of which is the bolt, but don't know if they will make a difference if used in either one.

Intratec wanted to go out of business of their own accord, rather than being forced out by the pending lawsuits. Jan, 2001 is the time that they picked, or in reality, were forced.....

Some of their guns were a pain in the butt, but they did have some that worked, and worked great.

Just another gun company to go down the tubes, just ahead of how many others?????

I own 2 AB-10 which came with 30 round mags. They were bought new. I have seen 20 round mags but never any 10 round mags. I hope that the 30 round mags are not illegal because this was how the guns were bought from Intratec. Any ideas on these mags.

I've seen the post ban guns offered by wholesalers with hi-cap mags too.... I just went along with it....

I have a few 10 rounders for the Tec line....

The AB10 was the post-ban version of the TEC9 and the later DC9. The Pre-ban models were offered with the 5" threaded barrel and shroud or the 3" threaded barrel without shroud. The post-ban AB10 stood for "A"fter "B"an "10"rd. Intratec started making the AB10 in 1994 after the ban. They called it the AB10 just to mess with the gov't, just like they renamed the TEC9 to DC9 just to mess with Washington "DC". Since after the ban, you could only make a "10"rd mag they wanted to throw it in the gov't's face that they had enough "pre-ban" mags to keep shipping their gun with a "high-capacity mag" for years. Not to mention, their gun was specifically mentioned by name in the Crime Bill and they specifically wanted to flaunt the fact that they still could make a gun after the ban. It simply had to meet the ban's criteria of no barrel shroud and no threaded muzzle. No problem, hence the "AB10". They couldn't make any more high cap mags, but they had so many thousands of them made up before the ban, they would be good to go for many, many years. So they just took it all in stride, made a few changes as need be, and kept pumping them out.

Anyway the post-ban gun was only offered with a non-threaded 3" barrel. It was offered in blue or stainless. Intratec continued offering/selling the gun with a pre-ban high cap mag (20rd or 32-36rd) until they finally ran out of them (high cap mags) in the last 1-2yrs of production. They then were shipped with new, post-ban 10rd mags. Intratec did go out of business in Jan. 2001, 3 years ago. Suppliers had their guns for quite a long while after that. Prices were extremely low while supplies lasted. There was no longer any kind of warranty since the company was out of business however.

Over the many years of production of the pre-ban and later post-ban guns there were various internal and external changes to the design. The style of the cocking handle, the sling swivels, the bolt design, but the basic styling remained the same. If the your weapon is marked "AB10" it is specifically a post-ban gun. I hope this helps.
