How does one acquire an AR15 'pistol' lower?
How would a person go about getting a lower receiver to build a pistol from?

Mr. Green, Remember last summer when we were shooting?? The guy that had the .50? He had a lower from DPMS, in Stainless Steel.. And I think he said you could get them for a pistol or rifle. Maybe call DPMS and ask???? Let me know....[:)]

Be very careful trying to assemble a pistol out of spare ar-15 lowers...you might very easily become a felon! It's illegal to make short-barreled rifles! "But it's a pistol!" one might argue. Nevertheless, you might run into some problems...IIRC, one of the key questions has to do with whether the frame was intended to be used for a pistol or rifle, but I'm not 100% sure on this.
This is definitely worth consulting an attorney on, since a screw can mean 5 years or more in prison, big fines, and being barred from possessing a firearm ever again.

You must begin with a lower receiver which was never assembled as a rifle. This means you cannot take the buttstock off of an existing AR and convert it into a pistol. Many companys offer stripped lowers as well as lowers which contain all of the internal component parts but were never fitted with stocks or assembled into barreled firearms. This is exactly what you need. The rest of the project depends on your ability to keep your new pistol out of the evil assault weapon classification. Be sure to fully understand the limitations of the 1994 Crime Bill on pistols before you get your project underway.

Hey there IGB, how you doing? I suppose that would be a good idea to call the manufacturer and get it straight from the horses mouth. Best to stay with a reputable one too I suppose. Though I don't know if it would really need to be extra strength or not.
Mark, yes the 1994 CB must definately be a consideration. Since I don't want to hassle with that, at that point I could just buy one of those Olympic Arms swiss-cheese models. So, this is either a post 09/14/2004 project or not at all if the AWB doesn't go away. So I guess I got some time to save more pennies.

I saw a new carbon fiber Bushmaster pistol (they bought out Professional Ordnance) at the gunshop awhile back for around $850. May be cheaper and less legal hassle to buy one already assembled.

I have one of these carbon pistol for Bushmaster. I haven't shot it much, but if it's anything like the my Professional Ordance rifle, the company that use to make these pistol than it was my well spent. 0 -
I am glad someone has asked this question because I too have been thinking of building my own AR style pistol. What MR. Christian stated is exactly what I was wondering about. Thank you sir. I would assume you would need to use the 9 round AR mags if it was to be built as a pistol, am I right in that assumption?

Mag size wouldn't factor into it at all. How the mag does fit into the equation is the way the crime bill is written. A detachable mag counts towards one of the 'bad' features under the definition. One way around that is to permanently attach the mag, such as on an OA-96 (I think that's the one).
