What is a good way to remove a gas tube from an AR15?

    With a small punch, a featherweight ballpeen hammer, and a block of pine. Works for me.

    YOu need a 5/64" drive pin punch and the small ballpeen hammer mentioned by Skyking. There are disassembly blocks made for this purpose but the pine will work just fine. Drive out the pin and then push the tube into the receiver until it clears the front sight assembly. Once the front of the tube is clear pull the tube up slightly and pull it forward to remove. Be careful not to bend the tube! Any reason in particular that you need to remove the tube?

    Just like Mark says, and the same question. Are you replacing it without trying to save it? Is it stuck in the frt. sight? If so clamp a pair of visegrips on it and tap the visegrips with a small ballpeen, line the jaws of the grips with leather or rubber and be careful not to crush the tube if you plan on useing it. It should just pop out. No comments on the backyard gunsmithing please, sometimes ya gotta make do when ya can't afford armory tools.

    Mainly because I want to learn to remove the barrel. And because I like to take things apart see how they work and put them back together again.

    I got the roll pin out, but the tube itself is stuck. I put some CLP on the spot where I think its stuck. So im going to wait a few minutes and try agian later. Thanks for the tips.

    Maybe a burr from the rollpin hole. Try turning the tube back and forth with the grips while you tap.

    SK: if push comes to shove, try a little heat from a propane torch. It may not take much to expand the block then use the visegrips with padding and small hammer.
    TRAPP55 is probably right, theres a burr from the rollpin hole, be carefull, it will come out, one way or another.

    No, its still stuck. It just wont budge.

    Well 2 choices,leave it alone or try this; heat up the frt. sight with a propane torch. Then while it's still hot use one of those compressed air cans ya use for blowing out pc's. Spray the tube close to the sight and have another pair of hands do the tapping. I can't believe everything else hasn't worked for you.It's made to be a tight fit but not that tight!Let me know if this works. A smith i know had the same problem with an AR a few years ago.He's out of state right now but when he's back i'll ask what he did and let you know.
