Rem. Mod. 14 Restoration

A little advice please. I've inherited an old Rem. Mod. 14 in .30 Rem., SN. 263xx, 22" barrel. The metal and bore look near new but the wood is rough, like mice have chewed on it. There is a hairline crack in the slide handle and the original butt plate was replaced with a recoil pad marked "hawkins". I would like to repair the crack in the forearm and refinish the stock. Would I seriously devalue the rifle by doing this work? This was my aunt's rifle and means a lot to me.

It is a perfect little saddle gun and very accurate but I just can't abide that crack in the forearm. Thank you for you advice.

  no you will not hurt the value. i can tell that it will never leave the family anyway. just take your time and get some acra glass to repair the cracked wood and you will be fine. i have restored one of these in the past. hot blue, refinished wood, etc.

  Do it right and find another stock. Watch the auctions and you should be able to get an uncut original with the proper buttplate for under $50.00. That's the only way the value won't be hurt. You will actually increase it's value.
