Case of Shotgun Shells, 20 To 10 Boxes?
When did shotgun shells go from 20 boxes to a case down to 10? Am I crazy or was this reduced at some time in the 70's?

booger, If I recall correctly, it was in the late 70s or very early 80s. But then again, I suffer from CRS. When shotgun shell prices rose, they started with the 10 box case price. I'm talking about Premium field loads, like 3 in. duck and goose loads. By the time steel shot came out, and was mandatory, (1987 in my state) everything was in 10 box cases by then. Regards Dave 0 -
in the 70's and 80's, many retailers were required at the customers request to literaly cut a box in half with a razor knife. i remember it like it was yesterday. so it started out as an idea from the retailers to the mfg'ers to sell 1/2 cases. then, this sorta really took a foothold in the early 90's. another reason was that many people (youngest and oldest) were complaining that they couldnt lift or carry 20 boxes(500 rds,)especially in 10 or 12ga, so the cases were split to make them easier to carry as well as for the dealers, so they wouldnt have to cut the boxes anymore. that wasnt so bad, what i dont like today is how mfg'ers only market 20 rounds per box and keep the same price of the older 25 per box! just go to walmart and look closely, youll see what i mean!

Thanks guys, I knew I wasn't crazy, just surrounded by non-believers. I think it is downright bogus to make a 20 round box. Very shady IMO.

in a personal quest to re-educate the shotgun gallery, i began many years ago refering to 1/2 cases as 'FLATS.' see....the mfgers still call 10 boxes of 25ea grouped shells 'cases.' no....cases are 500 rounds, not 250! so, the only way to change the deception is if everyone starts calling 250 rounds 'FLATS.' 2 flats = 1 case. get it? got it? good! help me achieve this nationwide! the industry needs this new unit of measure.

I'm at least halfway non senile. The last "case" of 20 AA's I purchased mid 80's. I was very popular at the dove field since I didn't reload and expended a vast number of shells in my attempts to "fan" those poor hot little birdies with the wind from my passing shot charge............
I see Remington is playing a new "game" with their Clays ammo. Great price! (20 per box) Could be a made to order run for "Richard's" Sporting Goods, cause that's where I saw them.[^]0 -
i teach new shooters and new shooters are constantly coming to my range without enough shells to play 4 games of skeet. (100 rds.) i tell em get '4 boxes' and they go to kmart or walmart and get 4 boxes....of 20 per box! i tell em a good price for AA's is 5.00 per box, but when they see a deal on a generic box of shells at only 3.75, they grab it! bingo. the mfger gets the sale, and the buyer is burnt! yes, ive learned to keep extras in my pouch for this and it gets old!
