Suggestions on 300 ultra mag
I'm getting ready to buy a new gun for hunting big game in Colo. I have a 270 that i've used for quite a few years. I'm looking to move up to a larger caliber. I've all but decided on Remington's m700 bdl 300 UM, but have never shot one, or know anyone who owns one. Any comments or suggestions on this would be helpful. I'm open to suggestions on other calibers, models, manufacturers, etc. Thanks.

go with the 7mm um. it is a better all around cart. i have fired a 300. my 7mm stw will out perform it and not burn as much powder.the sd of the .284 bullet gives it an edge over the .30 cal 0 -
If you want a .30 caliber, go with the .300 Winchester Mag. A better cartridge all the way around. 0 -
The 300 RUM is a great caliber but you are also dealing with great recoil. The ballistics are going to blow most anything else away (except the .30-378 Weatherby mag and the 7.82 Lazzeroni Warbird).
The tend to come with the muzzle breaks and this increases the noise (very,very loud).
I shoot the Sako Warbird and the gun can be found here at a reasonble price by Lazzman. It shoots smoother and is faster. The problem is the unless you handload, the ammo is rediculous ($100 for a box of 20).
The 30-378 is not much different form the Warbird and ammo is still about $60 for for a box.
I have had the 7mm RUM and they can shoot great with a 140 gr bullet. But for elk I would want more and you do not get the super speed with the 160 grain in a 7mm RUM (3100 fps). A 7mm STW will actually perform very close to the 7mm RUM. The 300RUM and the 7mm both come very hot from the factory, as does the weatherby. So you can not make much gains (safely) by handloading.
Another option would be the .338 Rem mag (Not Ultra Mag unless you really like recoil)and load it with 180 gr or 175 gr bullets. I had this done and it shot flat (3160fps) and accurate 1" moa. My cousin bought it when I went to the warbird and I watched him shoot his deer at 309 yards in high winds and the bullet hit right where he was aiming. I also saw it perform at 400 yards (targets) and it was impressive. The recoil was no where near the that of RUMs and the warbird but the peformance was close. Hope this helps.
Also go to the remington site and look under the ammo, then ballistics and see what the cartridges will do.

Thanks for everyone's input, it was very helpful. I think I'm going with the 300 UM. My buddy has a 7mm rum and loves it. But I think I can shoot a larger bullet and still beet him on f.p.s. with the 300 um. Travis, I think you are definately right about the recoil, so a muzzle break is must. My buddy put one on his 7mm um and it took away almost 80% of the kick. Your also right about the increased noise, but when I'm blasting away at a big bull I doubt I will notice it. So now I just need to decide on Remington or Sako, or maybe Browing(I really like the A bolt). Thanks again. 0 -
I would go the Sako. I have the warbird in the TRG-s and love it (actually had two). Accuracy has been unbelivable (the guns, not mine) both shooting around 3,600 fps+ in groups less than 6/10" moa (first gun) and 1/4" (current one).
As for the noise of a brake. You will not mind it as much as your buddy.[:D]

As for my buddy, paybacks are in order. I stood about 2' from him last year while he cracked off three rounds at a 5 point bull. My ears rang for about an hour. But he did drop the bull, so it was worth it.0 -
I would check some local shops for price comparison. I found a Sako 75 Hunter 300 RUM listed for $799 plus $18 for shipping. It is listed on (This is backwards because it is the enemies website) america guns .com and the seller is Scotts Outdoor Sports (area code 850). Very beautiful gun. Hope this helps.
