Model 70 supergrade stock

OK, buddy has a model 70 (pre 64)supergrade in 375 H&H mag that he says has a hairline crack directly behind the action (possibly from the rear lug and excessive recoil??). I haven't had a chance to see it yet, but he said he was going to inject wood glue down in the crack with a syringe. I told him I didn't think that would hold up to a .375. Question is, would glass bedding & gluing the crack keep this from getting worse, or is he pretty much gonna have to get a new stock. He said it has a LOT of fiddleback and is a gourgeous piece of wood, so he doesn't want to ruin it completely. Hopefully I'll get to see it soon when I go there to hunt, but I told him not to shoot it (he's chomping at the bit) until he does someting to that stock (he just inherited the gun).

    do NOT USE WOOD GLUE. i fix hair line cracks with brownells acra glass. this is made for wood. first drill along the crack from inside the stock with a small drill bit, fill this hole with acra glass, take the same drill bit and push it (backwards) into the drilled hole full of acra glass. this will force the acra glass into the crack (you can do this several times if nesessary) refill the hole with acra glass and assemble the rifle (coated with release agent). clean up any acra glass on the stock and let cure over night. releave the area in back of the tang serveral thousandths after the acra glass sets up.

    Thanks, I told him once it's cracked it will never be worth what it was before, but he says it's a really pretty piece of wood and wants to try and save it. I'd like to see it to get an idea of how bad it is, but he's in my old home town. He's dying to shoot it, and I told him he better fix it before he does or he's liable to have a stock in several pieces. Thanks again for the reply; that drilling procedure sounds much better than trying to get it done with a syringe....

    Fix that stock just like Mike Wiskey pointed out. Then get a 2 nd stock maybe composit or the such and play with it and save the nice one for show and hunting one or two shots and it may still not hold. Just my .02
