JP Sauer 7.65 auto
I have a JP Sauer & Sohn Suhl Cal. 7.65 semi auto pistol. I am trying to determine the model, age and value of this pistol The only markings are the name and cal. as above on the left hand slide side. The right slide has Patent stamped on slide. Only other stamping is on right side frame behind upper side of grip 265841 serial number and below that a Z or sideways N followed by a symbol. Magizine hs intertwined S's allong with cal 7.65 and a 48 stamped on bottom. The holster with flap and extra clip has no markings either to help. Any insight or links to information would be appreciated.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on you owning a nice Sauer pistol. Based on what you've told us, Sauer made two pistols that could be the culprit--the model 1913 and the model 38--both of which had several variations. The big point of difference between the two is that the model 1913 has a big round cocking piece at the rear of the slide, making it look a little like a cheap copy of some sort of ray gun while the model 38 looks very much like a modern pistol with a standard flat sided slide. Then there are those markings you mentioned. Let's look more closely at a couple of those. First, you mentioned a patent, but is there a date to go with it? Second, that "Z or sideways N followed by a symbol," is that possibly a waffen amt--a very small eagle holding an even smaller circle with a swastika in it? There were very few model 1913's pressed into service during WWII that would have received a waffen amt, so if it has one, your pistol is probably a model 38. This isn't a very sound way to identify a pistol, so we really would like some more information. If you can't post a picture, search through the firearms for sale on GB using the Sauer name and you should find one just like yours that you can point too for us. Before you get too excited, however, let me warn you that while the model 38 is very collectible and some rare variations are worth considerably more than others, there are lots of folks out there who have extremely over inflated estimates of the value of their pistols. One fellow on GB has one posted now with a BIN price of more than twice the realistic price. So be very wary when looking at some of the ones on the internet. Go to the advanced search and look at completed auctions for Sauer pistols to get a better idea of value. Best of luck -- Steve 0
