130 grain bullets in a 30/06 wouldn't be my first, second or third choice for deer simply because that light of a bullet in 30 caliber is more of a varmint type bullet. The only exception would be if Barnes makes an X bullet in this weight, then that may still penetrate enough but still in my opinion not a good choice, go with a 150 grain bullet. With a light frangible bullet you run the risk of losing lots of meat, or worse losing the whole deer.

Before I loaded a 130 grain bullet for dear I would consult the manufacturer for his recommendation. Most 130 grain .30 caliber bullets are made for varment use and as a result they have a thin bullet jacket to open up on thinner skinned animals such as groundhogs and other small game. Jacket thickness and bullet construction are what's important here, not weight.

based on my 125gr NBT and 30-06 experience, although the deer was harvested, I would not want to use one at any less than 150yds. Prior to that (just a guess as to the range BTW) they are too fast and too frangible. I would stick to 150gr offerings and above.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

If you want to use 130's I would go with the Hornady 130's(interlocks). Barnes is discontinuing it's 130's in .308 but they still have them for sale on their website. They are the only ones that are constructed more for hunting medium game than varmints. You get excellent velocity with 130's too. Especially out of a 30-06. My take is that 130's would work fine for deer. With a two inch high zero @ 100 yds. you have a point blank zero of around 300 yds.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

Last summer I did some trials with 110, 125, 150 and 165 bullets in my Rem 700 in 30-06. The 165 sierra gameking was the most consistent even compared with the 150. I'm going to have to use up 6 boxes of the lighter bullets plinking around and go with the 165 for hunting deer. By the way, I got a similar result comparing 150 and 175 bullets in 8mm.

Another option would be to used the lighter bullets(125-130 gr SSP) designed for the single shot pistols and reduce your loads a bit. They are designed for medium game at velocities slightly lower than your standard rife velocity. Check the manuals for velocity for a load from a 14" TC and load to that velocity for your rifle and you should get good results.

I used a Barnes 140 gr X bullet in my 30-06 to deer hunt with in Louisianna, and I'll tell you what, That bullet did a superb job of killing deer. I don't know about the 130 grainers, but that 140 grain X bullet is my bullet of choice for whitetails out of a 30-06.

Speer bullet #2005 is a 130 gr hollow point. It is absolutely deadly on a deer. I dont care what they say about these being too light they kill like a lightning bolt.
I got onto them through Ralph Walker of Walker Arms in Alabama. He wrote an article on this bullet before he died.
He loaded them and tested them on a lot of deer through the hunt club he belonged to. He said it was absolutely the most certain drop them in their tracks bullet he had found.
Ive found the same thing true here in Va. I and several friends use them and a deer hit anywhere in the body drops on impact. Ive even seen very poor hits (placement) still anchor the animal ,it has such devastating shock effect.
    Try it for yourself.

    rjv140,

Barnes makes a new TSX 130 grain bullet that would be perfect for the 30-06:

    NEW .308" 130 gr TSX BT .196 (SD) .374 (BC) #30838

I use 180 gr. Hornady RN in my 30-06. They drop deer with no problem. They also don't blow them to pieces like the light weight bullets.[;)]
