Claw Extractor ???

I understand how a claw extractor works however my question is does the actual extractor.holdind the head of the cartridge, fit into a notch in the exterior of the chamber or is the chamber machined with a opening all the way around for extractor clearance when the bolt is closed?

  Both, depending on the model your talking about. Most Mauser pattern rifles use a flat face on the breach end of the barrel, some use a "safety breach" which has the extractor enter a notch on the end of the barrel.
