Nikon for hunting
Hi I was wondering if a new Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14-40mm w/ side focus could handel the recoil of a 270win. Also, would this power range be too much for hunting whitetales at 175-225 yards or would a 3-9-40mm be a better suit. Suggestions wiil be appriciated.

I put that same scope on my Ruger 10/22. It is nice and very clear, I do like the scope however it is not as bright as my Leupold vxII's or vxIII's I have on other rifles, as far as handling recoil from a 270 I doubt that it will have any problems there. The power range shouldn't be a big deal as the ranges you describe would be fine for the 4.5-14. If you were dealing with hunting in timber or heavier brush you might want to get a scope in the 2.5 or 3 power low end range. Good luck

Not quite the same scope, but I have a Nikon Monarch on a Steyer .270 that works perfectly. Great optics, and seems durable so far. Been on there about 4 years. 0 -

At the ranges you describe, I would go with a 3x-9x. Larger exit pupil will give you more light at the end of the day, and you really do not need the higher mags for whitetail. If you were shooting pdogs or coyotes it would be useful, but for big game much less so. Going to higher mags decreases the light through your scope which is much more of a liability than a little smaller image when aiming at deer. 3x-9x scopes have the best resale, because that is what everyone wants, but I never have a scope dialed above 4x-6x except at the range, and most of my scopes are 1.5x-6x or there abouts. 0
