P-08 Question
I was wondering what the range on a P-08 Mfg in 1914 might be worth. My neighbor has one that he wants to sell me. The asking price is $400 and I have interest but do not know enough about the gun. I know that this is not alot of information but I am wondering if 400 might be a reasonable price for it. I do know that the mag does not have matching numbers and it looks as if it was refinished some time ago. It is in good working order. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome. Thanks

The quick and dirty answer is that almost any luger is worth $400, especially one that is in working order. The longer answer, which would offer a better indication of just how much more than that it is worth, requires, as you have stated, a little more information. Some of the questions are easy, and some are a little harder, but by looking at the pistol, you should be able to provide enough information for a more meaningful evaluation. Among the things we'd like to know:
1. Is it in orginal condition? That means it hasn't been chrome plated, reblued or altered in some other manner.
2. Do all the visable numbers match.
3. What is the caliber? 7.65mm or 9mm
4. What are the grips made of? Wood? Plastic?
5. Does it have any "extranious" markings such as "Germany" or some other sort of mark that indicates that it has been recently imported?
6. Are there any markings on the front strap, where your fingers wrap around the frame?
7. How long is the barrel?
The answers to these will help narrow the value of the pistol. Best of luck and, if possible, let us see a picture of it once it's yours. Steve0 -
It would be difficult to go wrong with any functioning Luger at that price. At gun shows I see "dipped", import-marked Lugers for $600 or more.

No, it's not a stupid question. The best thing to do is to use the "search" function here on the tope of this page. After you click on search, type in "posting pictures" and you'll find a list of entries that discuss this topic. Go through the list and you see that you have to find a "host site" like photobucket.
