Winchester feeding problem

I have a Winchester 9422xtr (lever action) - supposed to take shorts, longs, and long rifle .22's. It won't cycle anything but long rifles, but will take any long rifles with ease.

The shorts and longs are picked up by the claw (or whatever you call it), action gets about 3/4 of the way to the fully open position, and wont go further. If you stick your finger in and gently pull the front of the bullet down and toward you, it will cycle.

ANy thoughts? Gunsmith or back to winchester?

    Duckhunter, what a great idea. I wish I would have thought of that. Let's see, oh wait, I did think of that, in 1985, when, after having the rifle for two years, and shooting only long rifles, I first tried shorts and longs in it. Been shooting it with long rifles for 20 years. Thought I would try to fix it before I die. But instead, I'll probably just sit at this computer with baited breath, until I die, waiting for another brilliant suggestion like that one.

    Thanks man, great idea. Good luck shooting those ducks. You can borrow my rifle if you like, but it only shoots long rifles.

    I'd rather you be duck hunting too.

    Now that is funny[:D]

    If it were me, I would take it to the local 'smith (he can probably benefit from having the business). It may also be as simple as a detailed cleaning.

    Oldoneeye, I agree with Bert, Try the detailed cleaning and if that doesn't get it, take it to a smith.

    By the way, if your car won't go, you could just sit in it and listen to the radio, I think that is what duckhunter does. Great response [8D] to his suggestion!

    I have an older 9422 that is supposed to shoot s,l & lr. If mine gets dirty, 250-300 rounds fired, it won't feed shorts. When it is clean it works better but I still get jams with the shorts every 40 rounds or so. The last 9422's made were not marked short on the barrel. Maybe they just decided not to try and fix it. It's a shame that Winchester quit making the 9422, mine has been a very good rifle and one of my favorite .22's. I have a range set up in my garage and I have fired this rifle about 30,000 times. The only parts that I have had to replace so far has been the firing pin. I would try a good cleaning. I use a pipe cleaner to clean out the shell rim groove on the bolt face so the rounds feed smoothly.

    OK, let me see if I am reading this correctly. It WILL feed Long Rifles, but not .22 Long. The case is the same, there is really just a very minute difference in OAL because of the lighter bullet in the .22 Long. If it feeds LR's you would think it would feed Longs also. Hmmm.

    The cleaning issue should solve the problem. Pay particular attention to the bolt face and the extractors.

    Country Gun - that is exactly what it is doing. The long rifles feed with no problem. Shorts and longs won't feed. Now, I am using CCI "CB" longs - for reduced sound (hence, why I really want it to shoot longs and shorts). Maybe that one "long" round is "short enough" to give it problems. I haven't measured or compared it against any other .22 long, I just assumed it was the same length. That is the only "long" I have tried shooitng in it. The others were shorts.
