What condition (readiness) do you store your gun?

I have a few semi-auto handguns that I store in a safe with the slides locked open, empty, and no mag. Is this a bad condition to store a gun in? I am concerned that it might weaken the spring.

    I store them slide closed and pin down on a snap cap.

    My Model 92 FS 9mm is stored with a loaded 15-round mag, 1 in the pipe, safety on.

    My 1911 .45 ACP, loaded 7-round mag, 1 in the pipe hammer completely decocked.

    Winchester Model 97 Riot Gun... fully loaded mag tube (No. 4 Tactical buck). Gotta love the sound of racking the slide[}:)].

    Everything else I own is in the safes empty and decocked (snap caps in the shotguns)

    This seems to pop up every 2 weeks. Springs of decent quality are not noticably weakened by being compressed to their NORMAL limits. Else your car would be sitting flat on the ground from the constant load of the weight weakening the springs in the suspension. [:p]

    Mag in, empty chamber, safety off.

    If autos, slides closed, mags in, safeties off. Usually have snap cap, or bright orange dummy in chamber (but may not). . .All guns unloaded, under lock and key. . .EXCEPT ONE.

    Home defense/carry wheelgun, cylinder full, in accessible locked container.

    Ammo stored in separate room as guns, except backup ammo for above gun.

    Most handguns; loaded and on safe (for autos)
    Most shotguns; loaded and on safe
    Most rifles; mags in, no round chambered, and safe on

    Pretty much everything is kept in a ready to go if I need it mode. I have frinds that joke that if I ever "needed" to shoot anything I would spend an hour deciding on what gun to use [:D]. All that being said most are locked in the safes when I am not home, if I am home the safes are unlocked.

    Just remember there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking questions.

    My G21 is kept loaded (1 in chamber, full mag) all other closed with the hammers down and safeties on

    Keep semi-autos unloaded and de-cocked, However, have revolver in house loaded and one inside safe. Feel that revolver is quicker weapon to place on target and use if I'm under stressful condition (coming from deep sleep, in a darkened house--not having to wory about safetys being on if a round has been put in chamber).

    Thanks for all your replies. I like having the guns unloaded, with the slide open, and a loaded mag sitting next to the gun. (in a safe) That way, I feel if needed, I can just pop the mag in, release the slide and I'm ready to go. I was just concerned that having the firearm sitting with the slide open for long periods of time would weaken the spring. Based on the comment from 116br, it sounds like that is not an issue. Thanks again.
