Taurus .22 Auto (good backup carry pistol)

Looking for comments on a Taurus PT22 .22 Automatic. Anybody own one ?

The size and weight seems about right for a backup carry gun.

I feel the need to have a backup gun in my possession primarily when I'm riding my motorcycle in an unfamiliar area.

As this episode unfolded I was wondering if I'd be able to get an 800 pound motorcycle pulled off of a lonely 2 lane into a gravel parking lot, get the kick stand down, set the bike on it without breaking my leg, open my left side saddlebag, draw my 9mm Browning, flip off the safety and chamber a round ALL before the order to squeal like a pig was issued.

So, I never ride without a handgun within easy reach. The sad fact is that the world is full of people who would happily put 2 behind your ear and dump you in a shallow grave just because they like your sparkling Harley Davidson or because they could chop it up and part it out easily and quickly. They wouldn't have any trouble sleeping that night.

Anyhow, this seems OK for an ankle holster. I usually like my trusty S&W .38 Airweight Hammerless. Only 5 rounds but it makes a serious enough Boom to scare away those who are left with no holes in them.

Somehow, I have this bad dream of carrying 2 Automatics and having both of them jam. It's happened more than once at the gun range. Wouldn't that be a treat. Bang, Bang, Click

    PT22's are a little light for a carry gun. PT25 are the same size and a little better round for defence. You could also look at the Seecamp and Kel Tec both in .32

    The only Taurus .22 I ever TRIED to shoot was described by it's owner as a jam-amatic. He was right. Couldn't get off more than 1 shot, if that, without a jam. He said he wished he'd bought the Beretta. My opinion: if you want a small .22 get the Beretta or a TPH. If you want a .25 get a knife. If you want a .32 get a Seecamp, for about $350, they are much smaller than the Beretta.

    I've got one of the phoenix arms 22s. Nary a jam in about a thousand rounds, using only CCI stingers. Only complaint is the safeties - hard to unload in a safe manner.

    Wife has one "biggest piece of crap ever" looks sweet gold trim & fake pearl grips. A complete jam o matic!!!
    You could do more dame by throwing it at somebody.

    I have had a PT-22 for a few years and could not ask for a better compact 22.I bought it at a deal and was suprised how accurate it is and have shot several hundred rounds through it with out a hiccup.The closest thing to a problem was I had to tighten a grip screw.

    I also have the Taurus PT22 nickel with walnut grip. Excellent little piece. Never has jammed and is fairly accurate for a DAO. I think I paid $140 for it new about 6 years ago.

    i've had 2 or 3 of these and as long as you keep them clean and use high vel. ammo you shouldn't have any problems

    I would consider carrying a revolver as a backup. Too many thing can go wrong with a semiauto. Have you checked out the S&W Airlights?

    I think that you are moving in the wrong direction. The S&W snubbie is my choice for Close Encounters of the Worst Kind. You are absolutely correct; no one says, "Let's rush him, he's only got 3 shots left!"

    I don't care for ankle holsters, as they take too much time (& too much bending) for speedy response. But, I understand that some folks have limited carry options, & sometimes that may be your best.

    I prefer the Pocket Holster, unless you wear jeans. I also like the fanny pack; yeah, it makes you look like a tourist, but the bad guys can usually smell fear - or the lack of it.

    Surely I'm NOT joking. If I were joking, I'd be asking for comments about the petal pink grips and whether it would match my new pumps.

    I have real guns, lot's of real guns. I was merely asking if this might be an OK backup weapon for riding my bike.

    Who knows. I might wund up throwing it at the bad guys. I saw Jimmy Cagney do that once and thought it was Moi Macho !
