How much should a 308 case expand in width in fire forming. This out of an older winchester lever action.

The case can only expand to the inside diameter of the rifles chamber, then it shrinks slightly, allowing you to remove it from the chamber. I have no exact measurements, but the expansion is not that much, maybe a few thousands or tens of thousands.
Your cases will also expand in length when fired.
It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.0 -
Just like muss said it will only expand as much as the chamber will allow, but also remember that all chambers are not the same size.
If the fired empty case will not go back into the chamber as easy as it did when you first put it in to fire it, then something is not right.

If the cases were fired in another rifle, they may not fit your lever action, just because of what mrbruce said, they are not all the same size. This is why you full length size a case when reloading. also be careful of the length.
