Rock Island .45 autos OK?

Browsing on the Gun auction site for a .45 auto, and saw some Rock Island .45's starting at under $400. a price I can afford. Are Rock Island's .45 decent pistols? Do they require some fiddling around to work/shoot properly? The price seems too good for a .45 auto 1911 look a like.

    Made in ASIA ok for a plinker but far from a Colt series 70 or les baer but not the same price as those either . ROCKWELL HARDNESS not very high!

    Has been Glock reliable right out of the box. It has some hammer bite. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. Actually thinking of picking up a 2nd one!

    What is Rockwell Hardness? Is this a measurement of the PSI quality of the metal? Can you give me some numbers if this is so?

    Hello rockwell hardness is the standard that is used by many firms in the USA . Hardness is not the last word in steel used in guns or knives ETC.You can make steel glass hard but then it might be brittle. The tester use an anvil and ball to press into the steel with a known pressure and then you measure the size of the dent.Better alloys of steel can be hardened to a higher ROCK WELL hardness without being brittle. you can make a soft gun shoot well but it will get loose quicker. hope this helps .

    I've yet to see a Rockwell Comparison on various 1911's out there. Nor do I want to dent any of my guns,

    Thank you drobs regarding your reply about Rock Island...I respect the opinions from the learned perry shooter but have lately become annoyed with his constant bashing of Rock Island...."Made in Asia", "quality of metal", on and on and on.... anytime the topic of Rock Island comes up, he never fails to come out of the woodwork and bash this product...I own a couple of Rock Islands and have found them to be more reliable than my Springers and Colt's....My Rock's go bang everytime...can't say that about my much more expensive 1911's...I recently completed a customization of my Armscor/Rock Island, putting over $2000.00 in Wilson Combat upgrades,checkering, etc. Best shooter in my collection.....Best 1911 clone for the money...that includes Springer GI, which has never been dependable even after many trips to gunsmith...

    I don't mean to bash perry shooter, but I have found my RIA to be my most reliable 1911. It puts my customized Colt series 70 to shame, whose functioning problems made me customize it in the 1st place. It feeds better than my Kimber.

    My RIA feeds Corbons JHP's that my Kimber has problems chambering. A few weeks ago I took the Kimber to a Combat shoot. Had loads of troubles, wished I had brought my Glock or RIA instead! [:(]

    Gentlemen I know everyone has an opinion and I hope when some one ask an open ended question I will be able to voice mine on this site . Guns are like cars and many of us have a passion for the brand we like in both guns and cars. I know I am a member of a very small group of older BULLS-EYE shooters . You can test the hardness of guns in a place that will not show. I suggested there were other choices that might be better for long term high useages. Sorry if I stepped on any toes but the orginal question asked for an opinion and that is what I gave .I do feel qualified to have an opinion shooting 45's competitively 41 years. Member of the 2600 club.
