Opions on .243 for whitetail
am going to nebraska for a hunt and have several rifles to choose from and was considering using this rifle , but in the back of my mind, was thinking i might end up with regrets...pos. or neg. comments welcome... thanks.

it will work fine if bullet selection and shot placement are good. use 95or 100 gr premimum bullets. I have killed a dozen or so deer one shot each with the .243. first one i ever wounded was with a 7 mag, just cause i made a crappy shot 0 -
Scott, We hunt in south Louisiana where long-range shots are fairly rare. There is one stand on the place ("Pipeline Stand") where one can see a fair piece in either direction down a natural gas pipeline right-of-way. One of the guys that hunts with us gets at least one deer almost every season with his 243 from that stand. My only rifle is a Ruger 7 mag and I have shot two from the same stand in the last 15 or so seasons. 0 -
A .243 or it's slighty stronger brother the 6mm work fine on deer IF the range is kept to no more than 200-225 yards tops and you are careful with shot placement and avoid angling shots.
I shot a deer last year at around 100 yards with my 6mm with a broad side behind the shoulder shot and he was dead before he hit the ground.
Shot a buck the year before in the same like manner using my .243 and he ran a whole 20 yards.
My brother shot and killed a 140 class buck in the pouring rain with a .243 at 75 yards with a behind the shoulder broad side shot.
On the other hand i have put in a lot of time on several occaisions looking for wounded deer hit by .243's by poor shot placement inexperienced hunters.
As i get older i appreciate the .243 and 6mm more and more.

The previous posters have it exactly nailed. Shot placement is paramont. A deer shot in the foot with a .300 mag is no deader that one shot in the foot with a .243. Now, ya gotta go practice, practice, practice. Good Luck!

I hunt with several calibers and I like a 243 as good as any.Last year I took 2 large does one at 250 and the other at 265 yards.My wife took a 240 pound 8 point at about 75 yards,one shot and he was dead when he hit the ground.When I first started hunting with a 243,I had doubts because I had always used 30-06 or other long action calibers and that 243 round seemed mighty small comparing the 06,but it always did as well as the larger calibers as is much more pleasant to shoot. 0 -

.243 Win is as good an open area caliber as most when it comes to deer sized game. It is flat shooting, there is a good selection of bullets to use, and it does not have a lot of recoil so that you can give a follow up shot with less recovery if necessary. I personally prefer shooting the 85 grain bullets at around 3100-3200. Nosler makes a good one and Hornady as well.
