Winchester model 12, 12 gauge shotgun

My father gave me the subject shotgun, a pump action with polychoke, which he bought for about $125 in 1947. It's only been used a few times and appears to be in excellent condition. I'm not necessarily interested in selling -- I was thinking about saving it for my 6 yr old son as an heirloom -- but if the price is right I could put it into savings for him. Could someone let me know its approx. value? Thanks.

    Unless the Poly Choke is original (and I don't think it is), the value of the gun hasn't kept pace with inflation. Keep if for your son.

    The more I think of it... Keep it for you son no matter what. Wouldn't it be great if in a hundred years a grandson several times removed were to be able to enjoy this heirloom?

    Hello subdog,

    Due to the post-factory installation of the Poly-choke, that old Winchester shotgun is no longer a "collector" grade gun... simply a nice shooter. Value (assuming that it is a standard Field grade gun) is about $200 - $250.

    Hello subdog: Well Winchester did offer the "Poly Choke" as an option, but not until the early to mid 1950's. If this is truely a "Factory" installation, look at the barrel legend where it says "Winchester Model 12 12 ga 2 3/4 Cham" If the barrel is stamped with one of the following (FULL or MOD. or Imp/Cyl) the Poly Coke was added. If there is no choke marking, it would be an original Winchester factory installation at the time it was built.

    But this is what caught my eye, your dad paid $125. for this gun in 1947. The suggested retail price for a Md 12 Field grade was $78.50

    So with that, you may have something other than a standard field grade gun. Can you provide a detail description of the gun? With more information we might be able to give you a much more accurate value.

    Subdog- FWIW- I have a shotgun that belonged to my grandad. It's a cheap little Iver Johnson 410, chambered for 2 inch shells. And you could not pry it away from me with a crowbar and a wrecker. Keep it for your son. By the way, the Iver is going to MY grandson.[;)]
