red dot or 2x scope

Which scope would be better for deer hunting with my .357 mag? Red Dot or a regular 2x scope? I'll be keeping my shots within 50yds.

    I like the red dot as you have a full field of veiw with no parallax and you just hold the red dot at center of Chest. You don't have to worry about eye relief.

    As I have aged and my eyesight drops off, I have found a red dot sight is easier to get on target for initial and follow up shots when necessary.

    I made the switch to a red dot on my Colt Anaconda about 10 years ago. Prior to that I had a Leupold M8-2X. The reason for the change was a situation where I had a whitetail less than 10 yards away and all I could see in the scope was brown.....

    The red dot type will give a wider field of view for those close shots, especially when you move up to the larger tube sizes like the 35mm and 40mm models. The only problem with the large tube models is keeping them in place on a hard kicking gun, but a .357 should not give you a problem. Choose one with a good mount built on to the bottom of the tube or choose a sturdy ring and base system from a well known maker. The mounting system seems to be the weak point when a red dot is put on a handgun.

    RED DOT is the only way to go. Even for shots greater than 50. Also get the largest diameter for greater field of view. I think the have 45MM now.

    WOW, I am going to disagree here about dots and shooting game. I have a red dot on a .44 mag super Blackhawk. I flat out HATE it, I have missed deer BECAUSE of it. I am throwing it away. I can hit a 10" plate with it at 165 yards pretty much all day, but I still hate it for HUNTING.
    A magnification of 2X helps me in low light to see the shot placement, branches or other obstacles. I have alos suffered red dot glare on even low power setings making the dot too bright in relation to the target in low light shooting. A red dot is great for bullseye shooting but seems hard for me to find the dot in fast shooting at game. The zero mag. seems to be a negative power when looking at game to make clean shots.

    I like crosshairs, they are natural to look at for the eye. If it is a longer shot it seems easier to hold a bit higher on fur to hit the spot I want to hit. But a dot at zero maginifaction just covers a bigger part of the deer.

    Conversely, if I am shooting bullseye....give me the dot!
