Ruger GP-100

my buddy has a gp100 in 357 mag 6 inch barrel and he can not get the cylinder to close if he puts the same 38 specials that i shoot in my 357 black hawk. could he not shoot 38 specials out of that gun?

    Yes, he can shoot the same 38 spl. out of his GP100. If the 38's are factory loads there should be no problem. If the 38's are reloads the primers may not be seated all the way and there is not enough clearance between the cylinder and recoil shield, or other problems related to reloads.

    The GP100 should be able to easily accomodate 38 Specials in the cylinder. The GP100 will handle 38 Special as well as 357 Magnum.

    Does it chamber a 357 Magnum? Are you shooting reloads? Does this happen in all chambers of the cylinder?

    I have had expiences with my GP where the brass (either 38 or 357) may not be sized correctly, especially at the base of the cartridge close to the rim. This allows the cartridge to almost chamber but leaves slightly too much cartrdige length to close the cylinder. My advice would be to try another batch of brass, especially a factory load sized to SAAMI specifications and see if it chambers.

    If it does not chamber look into the cylinder chambers and see if there is any dirt or build up in the chambers. Sometimes residue can build up in the chamber and prevent proper chambering. If there is, scrub them out real good with a wire brush and cleaning solvent. Also check the recoil shield (where the firing pin is located in the frame) and make sure it is clean. Then try again.

    If that doesn't work I would check the mechanics of the pistol and make sure there is no end-shake on the cylinder and that it locks up tight. Next take it to a gunsmith.
