i would like to know how accurate a 30-30 could be in a high qualtily target grade rifle

The 30-30 round itself is capable of extreme accuracy. However you will have to get away from the flat nose bullet needed in the lever action rifle tube magazines. In a single shot or bolt action rifle, and using spitzer boat-tailed bullets, sub 1" groups at 100 yards are possible. 0 -
I have a modern version of the 1885 in 30-30 that will consistently shot 1 inch groups all day in the hands of a good shot. Unfortunately, I'm a terrible shot. Another key is that these are handloads. Factory loads are far less accurate, but they still shoot better than I can, so that's ok by me. The other factor is distance. I've been unable to find a combination of powder and projectile that will reach beyond 200 yards with accuracy and consistancy. However, I have not been willing to push the envelope in terms of velocity.
Several years ago, I think it was Savage that made a 30-30 in a bolt gun that I always wanted to try. It's not pretty as it was intended as a economical hunting rifle, but I was always curious as to its capability. And naturally, there is the Savage 99 in 30-30, but I've never been able to get my hands on one of those either. Best of luck. Let us know if you decide to find or make one.0 -
Winchester made their original Bolt-action hi-power rifle (the Model 54) in 30-30. Using 150 grain BTHPs, the velocity can easily reach the 2400 fps range... and shoot sub moa 100 yard groups.
Winchester also chambered a few hundred of the original Model 1885 single shot rifles for the 30 WCF (30-30), and with the 30-inch standard barrel, the accuracy should be outstanding, and muzzle velocities in the 2500 - 2600 fps range should be attainable... I am still looking for one of them to add to my high-wall collection[:p][8D]
Accuracy for the 30-30 in a modern single-shot or bolt-action should be very good with proper hand loads.

like bert said the .30/30 is a VERY accurate cartridge, I had a falling block works sigle shot that would shoot 1/2" groups and I have a m-54 Win. now that shoots almost as well. 0 -
A few years ago a friend had a Winchester mod.54 chambered in 30-30. The rifle was topped with a reciever sight and with his handloads(secret) that rifle was unbeatable at 100yds. The local turkey shoot crowd(north east Pa.)knew better than to try and out shoot that rifle! One paticular shoot I well remember that five of the ten shooters borrowed the 54 and it ended with a four place tie! I was one of the four! He has passed on and his widow holds tightly to the 54![:)] Fond memories[:)]

I have a 30-30 Ackley in a 14 inch Contender barrel that shoot such tight groups @ 100 yards with 125 Ballistic Tips.........thats it's almost scarey at times.
Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.0
