Belgium made JC Higgins Model 50 info?
When and by whom was a JC Higgins Model 50 made? It is marked as made in Belguim. Condition is about 80-85%. What would be a good price to pay for one in 30-06 caliber? Is it a desireable gun to own, not for a collection but for hunting? Thanks for any replies.

J.C. Higgins Model 50 bolt action:
Made by Belgium's Fabrique Nationale on a commercial Mauser 98 action, the rifle was purchased through Sears and Roebuck.
Somewhere on the receiver and/or barrel there should be an 'FN' in an oval or the words 'Fabrique de Nationale'. There are several other marks that reference the Belgium heritage but you can find those elsewhere on the web.
I've managed to find these anywhere from $200.00 to $300.00 depending on condition. They were not available in many chamberings with the 30-06 and .270 dominating the total numbers. The 30-06 should make a terrific hunting rifle with either open sights or a scope.
The Mauser M98 configuration is desirable to folks that like Mausers but less so to those who only tolerate Remingtons and such. I am a Mauser lover and truly enjoy the design and the function. These are tops in engineering and manufacturing.

NONONSENSE IS ON THE MONEY. FURTHER, THESE RIFLES WERE MADE WITH HI - STANDARD BARRELS. MOST, IF NOT HAD CHROME BORES. 0 -
High Standard made the barrels and stocks and assembled the Model with FN manufactured Mauser designed actions. There were several variations in two calibers .30-06 and .270 as was the model 51. The model 51L was made with HVA manufactured actions and was offered in two additional calibers .308 and .243. The Model 52 was a Sako action rifle in .222 also by High Standard. Sears also sold the Model 50 as a barreled action called the 50A. The model 50 was in Sears catalog from 1951 through 1957.
These guns all have an identification number on them that begins 583. followed by additional digits. The 583 is the Sears code that High Standard was the manufacturer and the digits following the period designate the models and its variations.

Thanks for the replies to my post of over 2 years ago. I wasn't able to buy the rifle I inquired about as it was sold at auction and brought over $350. I have continued looking for these and today found and bought an excellent one in 30-06 caliber at a very good price complete with a Weaver 3-9 scope. It has an FN action, is marked Model 50 and has the number 583.92 on the barrel. I believe this means the barrel is a High Standard and the rifle is assembled by them. The rear sight base is very much like those on a Remington 722. The bore is still bright. Is there an easy way to tell if it is chromed? It doesn't look chromed to me but the condition is almost too good for its age. I'll try to post some pictures when I get a chance. 0
