Marvel 22 Conversion Unit - Leading Problem
I got a new Marvel 22 Conversion Unit for my 45ACP several weeks ago.
I have been trying out various types of ammo with the new unit and am experiencing leading of the barrel when I use Remington 22 LR Thunderbolts. This is one of the cartridges recommended by Marvel. It does cycle the action without any problems. Luckily, the barrel is polished so it cleans up without too much difficulty.
I have a also tried CCI Mini Mags and they work pretty much flawlessly with no leading and good accuracy.
After comparing the two cartridges, the Thunderbolt bullet does not appear to be lubricated, while the Mini Mags have a rather generous covering of lubricant. I suspect this may be the difference.
Have any of you who use Marvel units experienced the leading and what type of ammunition have you settled on using with your Marvel unit? Do the Remington Cyclones do any better? It is picky.
Any information would be appreciated.

Thunderbolts are the lowest cost junk .22 ammo sold that I have ever seen.
Even with that fact; the cleaning of a .22 barrel is generally not done (or needed) except after several thousand rounds. Are you sure it is lead and not the bullet lube buildup? Thunderbolts have a blackish wax type lube on them. It could be graphite based and leave the apperance of lead buildup in the barrel.

Hello I go along with 1958 There are many shooters useing the marvel conversion unit in N.R.A. Bulls-Eye shooting and with good ammo ELEY, SK, FED, RWS, ETC I have never had anyone say they had leading trouble. most pistol shooters clean the breach face and chamber but some go years without cleaning the bore. 0 -

Yeah, it is definitely lead. The leading was so bad it was even coming out of the muzzle by the time I noticed it! I brushed it out when I got home and the typical flakes came out of the barrel so it is definitely lead. Accuracy went to hell at the same time - really bad. That's what prompted me to look down the barrel.
This is one of the rounds that Marvel recommends for their units but it sure doesn't like mine. The CCI Mini Mags do just fine. I think I will confine my ammunition to the CCIs and try some other good stuff like Eley or RWS. I would have to agree that the Thunderbolts are junk.
The literature that came from Marvel even had a warning not to use Federal ammo and I can confirm that - every shot jams.

My inclination would be to contact Remington giving them the lot #. Since another brand does not cause leading, the most reasonable conclusion is that the ammo is at fault. 0 -
Remington is one company that I have had ZERO success in getting any customer satisfaction with in regards to ammo. The golden .22's sold at wall mart are just as bad as the Thunderbolts. Over a chrono in 3 different rifles the fastest round was over 150 FPS slower than advertised. the slowest shots were around 750 FPS.
Remington did not care.
Try federal match ammo, you can get a brick cheap from www.ammonman.com to give them a try. Wolf match target is another good one to check out.
A .22 can bee hard to find what it likes to shoot. Your new toy may just need some break-in shooting before it settles down. It seems that a .22 needs about 500 rounds to lap in the barrel.
Also, if you had leading so bad it was hanging in strings from the barrel it seems to be a barrel problem more than a bullet problem to me.
I suspect marketing is the reason behind the recommendations on ammo brand. They may have some inter business alliances we are not aware of.0
