need advice
I have a gun I am thinking of selling. No idea what kind of gun it is because i cannot find it in any books. Description is as follows:It reads Marlin 1898. It is lever action. 38 w is the caliber. Has a octagon barrel. The action and barrel are chromed. Can anyone tell me it's worth and any facts?

Has anyone purchased a gun online to find it wasn't in the condition described? How did you resolve it? What if the seller is unwilling to remedy the issue? I am just looking for advice from the experts who I am sure have run into this problem at one time or another.

welcome to the forum,I'm not an expert but any of those you mention would probably serve you well.If you want an economical rifle check on a Savage package that comes with a scope,mounts and ready to go.Also don't overlook a Ruger,they are very good shooters also.Which ever you choose,I'd recommend a good scope like a Leupold that has very good eye relief for the recoil of the '06.Good luck on your search,Bob. 0 -
Welcome to the forum. If it were up to me, I would get the CZ. They are great rifles, and have one of the best triggers on the market. The single set trigger is awesome. They are also great shooters, I've never had anyone complain about the accuracy. Good luck with whatever you decide.

All 3 of the rifles you mentioned are sufficeint for the average hunter, buy the one that feels best in your hands and agrees most with your wallet. The Savage combos are also good guns at a fair price.
I would like to offer a word of caution; Spend A LOT OF TIME handling the thumbhole before you buy it! (If you think that's what you want) Try to shoulder it quickly and accurately, see if the hand fit and cheek wield are comfortable, does the rifle come up square and true or canted? If it's NOT a custom thumbhole there is a good chance it WILL NOT fit you quite right. If you shoot primarily from a bench or rest this may not affect you as badly, but in shooting off-hand this can be a major PITA!
Spend as much time as you can handling, working and if possible, SHOOTING any of the rifles you are considering, this will tell you a lot. If possible take someone with you who has experience with firearms, especially rifles.

If you're looking for a nice solid 30-06 and not opposed to a semi-auto, you should check out the M1 Garand. 0 -
While the M1 Garand is a fine weapon, as an all round rifle, it leaves much to be desired.
It is heavy, is limited in the weights of ammunition it can use. And I don't believe it is an easy rifle to satisfactorily scope.

I'll go with what most posters here say. Including the one about the thumbhole stock on the Howa's, they are great on the bench or prone if they fit but for handling offhand they aren't really desirable. I like the three position safety that Winchester, Ruger and now CZ 550's have. Although some people here say they are too loud in the woods. That can be rectified by keeping your finger on the safety lever as you move it...just like any other safety lever or tang.
Savage gives about the best package going. If you are looking at a classier package you can get the new 114 classic in 30-06 for about 200 bucks less than Winchester or Remington. Ask your gun dealer to show you one, or at least a brochure. Or better yet, go to www.Savagearms.com. It is a fine looking rifle for much less than the competition is, and Savage's are known for being quite the shooters. -Good luck with your choice.

I sure do love my Ruger Model 77. Mine's a .257 roberts because I got tired of the 30-06 recoil, and the fact that I now live in South Carolina where the deer are smaller than the NY and PA bucks I used to hunt. 0 -
Get a Ruger 77, They include the scope mounts in the box and Buy a Leupold VX-1. Great quality low cost package for somone starting out.
