Need help on value and age of S&W Model 40 very good condition.Ser. # 178xx Also Rem. 11-48 Vent rib, mod. choke. Excellent condition only drawback is Ithaca Sunburst buttpad expertly installed. E-mail with any information DEin2000@aol.com. Thanks

    Is that a Model 40 5 shot revolver with grip safety? If so I would need a picture to verify condition -- those are not too common.

    It is a Model 40 5 shot with grip safety. Ring on cylinder otherwise excellent condition. I will see if I can get a pic of each side.

    Model 40 is early 60's say 1961 +/- and to get more exact you would need to get a letter from S&W ($35).

    These are kinda scarce and I'd say with a light turn ring on the cylinder, in my part of the world $400-450 would be about right, but it is a narrow market ... so if your selling be patient. You can always lower the price to a prospective, but ya can't raise it.

    xp100, don't let anybody kid you... that 11-48 will bring way better money than the book says if it is original, uncut and clean. The vent rib helps, the choke helps and the .410 helps, I'd say if it's nice, it should bring closer to $450... I say this because I HAVE one, spent 2 years trying to find it lost out to several that were SNAPPED UP at guns shows for the $400 to $450 mark...

    S&W Centennials were stamped with '40' beginning in 1957 and serial #s were changed to having an 'L' prefix around 1970 or so, with production ceasing in 1974. Your revolver's serial number (not an L prefix -- '40' L's only went from approx L1 up to approx L9861) is certainly a much earlier than 1968 production date and it should have the diamond insert grip -- condition of this revolver could run the price up significantly, and if the factory grips are in excellent condition they can be worth a tidy sum by themselves, try to find a set! Unless it is a clunker, even trying to put Laser grips on it should be against the law!!! I have both an 'L' 40 and an 'L' 42 in inventory, NIB, and refuse to put them up for sale until I find a couple of similar ones that are either pre-40/42's or later ones with diamond insert grips; I have been looking for a long time...
