Sorry but another K31 question...
Ok, I'm a bit spoiled by the quick responses here. I posted this on a couple of boards dedicated to either Swiss or refinishing and they just dont answer as quickly as here. [:p]
What is the best solvent to use to take off the original finish on this Swiss K-31? I tried mineral spirits at first and that just cleaned the dirt off. Denatured alcohol seems to be working a bit but looks like it may take a looooong time to get it all off. Another question is what should the wood look like once all of the finish is gone? I'm not sure what wood this is so I'm not sure what it will look like bare (especially 60 year old wood).

Not sure on removing the finish...there are several methods - some people even use oven cleaner.
Your stock is either beech or walnut. Year of manufacture?0 -
sweaver---although this is a great forum, a better forum for finding answers to questions about your K-31 would be the C&R forum. They have a specific forum Swiss military rifles (mainly the K-31) and others for questions about cleaning and refinishing stocks etc. A great forum if you're interested in old military rifles, and probably any question you have will have an answer already posted somewhere. Sorry---I guess I already gave you this answer once. Didn't realize I was answering the same guy. Have you tried the purple degreaser product that they sell at Wal Mart and other discount stores?? It works well for other military rifles. I removed the finish off a K-31, but it's been long enough that I forgot what I used. I don't remember if the purple stuff removed the varnish or whatever it is they finish the K-31 with. 0 -

I think one of the main guys is called GUISAN on there he answers questions pretty quick if not then scorpion31 should.

I used "Greased Lightning". It removed dirt, cosmoline, and finish. A little light sanding and some Golden Pecan stain later... 0 -
