Savage 40 22 Hornet

i was looking at the savage40 22 hornet it looks like a really great gun the only thing i do not like about the gun is the fact that it is only a single shot bolt action. i have never had a single shot rifle and if i get it i might end up kicking myself when i could spend a hundred or so dollars more on a cz 22 hornet that has a magazine. can someone give me there opinion.

    A single shot rifle presupposes a certain frame of mind. Deliberate, methodical, and willing to wait out the shot. Not for every body...so most get a repeater and blaze away till they hit something...or wound it....

    The Savage is a great rifle.

    Savage contacted me (my company, HGW) several years ago when the statred working on the m-40, about the magazines for 22 Hornet that the old Savage Company used to make. They had reorganized and sold off the rights to the magazine (no records).
    Told Savage that Numrich Gun Parts owns the tooling and rights to the magazines. Apparently Numrich wasn't willing to make a deal with Savage for magazines, so the M-40 became a single shot.
    Have been looking a my M-40 and it dosen't look too hard to convert to clip fed. Mill out reveiver, add a hanger for mag release and alter stock (like M-340). One of my many projects to look at (sometime).

    you should try tha single shot you will pyobably love it. There is a shool of thought that they are more ridgid than a reapter hence more accurate. At any rate it will make you more careful with your 1st shot and with a little practice the 2nd shot wont be terribly slow.As far as savage vs cz definitly the cz will be a nicer finish but, it would suprise me if its much more accurate.

    The savage should shoot fine, but the CZ is in a totally different class. For $100 you get an adjustable set trigger, a detachable mag, integral ring mounts, and awesome wood.

    Been looking for a Model 40 myself. Haven't found one yet, but vs. the CZ they're definately 2 very different rifles. My money would be on the 40 for an accuracy edge. Certainly the stock is better suited to serious work off the bench or from a rest and I wouldn't feel at all handicapped with the Savage Accu-trigger. Either way, if you get into reloading for it take a hard look at Hodgdon Little Gun powder and a good 40 grain pill.

    At one time I did a lot of chucking with a Winchester single shot Low Wall 22 Hornet. I never felt at a disadvantage not having a second, third or fourth shot. At that time the BRNO mini Mauser 22Hornet with schnable stock and double set triggers was beckoning to me but it didn't justify for that kind of shooting.

    RCrosby...Last I looked the M-40 is not available with the Accu-trigger. Am I still correct on this?

    I recall (but don't recall where) reading a review of the Model 40. The test rifle did not have the Accu-trigger, but the text claimed that the production run would include the better trigger. Of course at that time they were also talking about chambering in the Hornet and the .223 and I have since read that the initial offering is in Hornet only. Either way it looks to me like one helluva rifle for the money and though I have a .222 and Swift, my Hornet does all I need and more for 90% of my .22 shooting.
