WHY DOES MY NEW ROCK ISLAND NOT FEED PROPERLY
Just bought a New Rock Island 45 but I am already having problems with feeding. I Try to load the 1st round but it catches on the ramp every time. I tried to smooth down the ramp but it just made it even worse. With ball nose and especially with hollow points. Any body have this problem ? Anybody have any suggestions on what I should do?

Are you riding the slide forward? When you insert your loaded mag, pull back on the slide and let it move forward under its own momentum, don't keep your hand on the slide!

if it's new don't mess with it. Send it back. If it's used try a dofferent mag or bend the lips open in the front of the mag a bit. That will change the angle of approach of the round to the chamber. Use caution when bending the lips just a little will help a lot. 0 -
Have you gone past the 500 rounds break in period?, if you send it back and the answer to that question is no they will send it back until you do
Put only a few rounds in the magazine then tap on the rear of the magazine to seat the bullets , now Lock the slide back, then insert mag, then activate slide release to let it go foreword on its own, I do hope you did not remove any material when you "smoothed the ramp down"
DO NOT bend the lips of the magazine, trying to get the correct angle is very difficult even by professionals with out a proper jig, you may get lucky but the odds are you will not0 -
do your mags have a teat on the top center of the bullet guide bar? that teat is designed to kick the back of the round up as it feeds. many new guns dropped that feature. try a usgi mag and see if it helps.

Lets start from the beginning.
1)1911's do not like HP ammo.
2)Never use the dremmel!
3)How smooth did you make the ramp.
4)I have never had this problem with mine, if so it would have gone back before I even touched it.
5)Take it to a competent gunsmith to look at.

I smoothed the ramp down with scotchbright and bought 2 colt 45 8rd. mags to try them out. It was the mag. What was happening was when the 1st round was being loaded into the barrel, the nose of the bullet was being tilted down and hitting the ramp. I did pull out the top of the magazine on both sides a little on the mag it came with and there it was ! The new colt mags work perfectly also. Do you think that the ramp will start to rust where I smoothed it out ? If so, whats a good way to keep it from happening ? Oil or some other form of coating. Thanks guys for your help. This is my 1st 1911 to own. I tell you, Glock pistols sure are a lot easier to break down and had no problems what so ever with.

I don't think you have to worry about the ramp corroding with normal use and providing it doesn't get wet.
Hundreds of 1911s have their ramps polished every year and I have never heard of a corrosion problem. I have two 1911s both with polished ramps and have never done anything but ordinary maintenance on both pistols. If you think about it, polishing the ramp really isn't much different than normal wear. Anyway, be very careful with the ramp because the angles are extremely important to maintain as stated earlier. Changing the geometry of those surfaces would probably mean a new frame. Many ramp jobs only lightly hand polish out the machine marks and this is as far as the job needs to go. Its the polished surface that assists the feeding from the magazine.
Keep a light coating of oil on the ramp when it is being stored and try to keep it in a low humidity environment.

If you are loading your magazine to full 8 rd. capacity, there is too much upward pressure in the magazine/chamber area. Download the magazine 5 rounds and see if she feeds properly. The suggestion to release the slide and let the weapon function as designed is a good one. If she feeds fine after all this, then only load your magazine up to 7 rounds. The only 8 round magazines that I have seen that work OK in any of my 1911's are the Wilson, McCormick and Metalform mags.

Glad you got it figured out. It is a good 1911 just to play around with, I had to clean mine before I shot it. When I broke it down it looked like coffee grounds inside but cleaned up pretty well.
