Why does a thread get "locked"?

The thread topic I started on readiness conditon is now "locked". Why?

Generally, the moderator of this forum will lock a topic after 10 responses.

The idea is that after 10 replies, the subject has been pretty much covered.

That's crazy. Obviously a topic that has many replies is of interest to a lot of people, and should continue. I've never heard of this being done on any other forums.

After 10 replies there usually isn't any additional info being added and the topic tends to wander off somewhere. If there is still info being added Capt will usually let the topic keep running or someone will start a "Cont'd" thread

i used to think that to, but stick around 99% of them will be answered by 10 replies, and the thread will become a discussion, or deviate from the original intent after that and should have been in general discussion, it has been a tried and proved method
