Rem 722 .257 owners weigh in please.

I have an issue going on with my dad who used to own one of these. First, there is a little story behind this. My dad sold his 722 to his brother so he could buy a Rem 700 in the then brand new .243 Win. Some years later during a reloading mishap we didn't properly powder a case and sent the bullet halfway down the barrel. I took it to a friend who "knew what he was doing" and took a cleaning rod and peened the bullet into the barrel. Anyhow, the rifle was then rebarreled with a .257 Roberts barrel. Well, the rifle shoots well but doesn't feed well...it's basically a single shot. I have suggested numerous times to file the rails to match the different taper of the .257 from the .243. A different follower would help also. Now my dad is saying that his old Rem 722 never fed the bullets well either. He even borrowed the rifle back to "measure" the rails.
What I want to know is if any of you 722 .257 owners experience this same problem. If some of you Rem 722 .257 owners also have a Rem 700 in .243, 260, 7mm-08, or .308 could you measure the rails to see if there is more taper built in for the .257 or not.
I need some kind of facts/affidavits to go on to address this to my dad(so he can hear it from somone else) before he finally adjusts the rifle to feed correctly. Thanks anyone who weighs in.

    I have a 257 Roberts in a Ruger MKII ultra Light rifle. This rifle functions and feeds absolutely perfect and flawlessly no matter what.
    Can't imagine that there would be a flaw with the 722 in 257 that everyone has just put up with for all these years?

    this is NOT something you should even considered, this is what a good GUNSMITH is in business for. you are trying to save $50/75 in an atempt to ruin a $300 action.

    I can't see why either...must be some reason they get snapped up.

    I learned this under the tutelage of a gunsmith friend of mine. I forgot to mention I have done it with a few of my own rifles. I'm talking about evenly removing about .015"-0.000" of an inch over the length of the side rail on each side. Not messing with the forward ring and not heating the action in any way. Anyway, I do appreciate what you know about the 722 as you may have possibly dealt with this issue in the past?
    Mike, I also forgot to mention, a gunsmith did the rebarreling, and he more than likely would take it in to a good(very good) gunsmith who would make these adjustments....if he believed me.
