ready to wade into TC waters
I have wanted a Thompson Centerfire handgun for a long time.
I may be able to afford one now.
With the models that are out, and not all bbls being able to switch, I could use some advice. I don't think I would want to use anything larger than 30/30 and would probably lean towards the 223, the swift, and other super 22 types.
Please advise

Be Careful ... they are addictive!
The Encore and Contender (original or G2) barrels DO NOT interchange.
Neither the Encore or G2 have adjustable trigger pull weight, but they do have overtravel. You can get a trigger job on these, but what ever you get it setup for your stuck with it unless you change out the trigger group.
The original Contender permits trigger weight as well as overtravel. They have been out of production for a few years now, but they are still available. In fact prices are going up because people are buying them to get the pull weight adjustment. Frames alone can now run over $250 and that's used ....
In the calibers you mention I think you might want to look at the Original Contenders as well as the new G2 models. I'd not recommend an Encore as you don't need the high pressure frame. And there is a lot wider barrel selection out there for both "Contender" models as the barrels interchange. However the grip and/or butt stock of the original Contender is not interchangeable with the new G2 model. The forends are, but they don't look all that good, regardless of which direction you go.
Unless you reload, your better to go with the 223 as there are a lot of ammo choices.

I have 14" barell in .223 and a 10" octagon barrel in 30-30 for my older frame contender. The 30-30 is fun to shoot but I haven't had much luck getting a handload to work well in it for accuracy. The .223 is a nail driver with my 2.5-7 power TC scope. I just got a 16.5 plus muzzle tamer barrel in 45-70 for it but have not shot it. Also I have a .45 colt/.410 bbl and a 10" .22lr. THEY ARE ADDICTIVE as contenderman stated. I have not used an encore to date, but they are rated for much higher pressures like the .300 winmag and will use .243, .308, 30-06, 270 and others. a notable benefit to the contender, tho is the ability to fire rimfires with selectable firing pin. So, if you want something from 22lr to 30-30 in low pressure (including .223) get the contender. If you don't care for rimfires and want to run in the magnum area, get an encore. [:)][^] 0 -

The only 22 cal you can use in the CONTENDER / G2 is:
22 LR
22 Mag.
22 Jet
22 Hornet
22 K Hornet
218 Bee
221 Fireball
222 Rem.
223 Rem.
222 Mag.
219 Zipper
204 Ruger
And as for the 220 Swift,,22-250,,ONLY WORK ON THE ENCORE!
If your going with the 223 or 30-30 get it the 14" barrel.

Go for the gusto and get an Encore so your options [calibers] are not limited. Mike Bellm sells trigger spring kits to get the Encore trigger down to a reasonable weight should you want to do so. I reduced an Encore trigger pull from 58-60 ounces down to 24-26 ounces with a #5 spring. Mike's on-line instructions & pictures made it a simple job. http://bellmtcs.tripod.com/id19.htm 0 -
my advice is always buy new.
because tc's have interchangable bbls, you never really know what was on the gun before it was sold or during its lifetime. the gun you may look at used with a 22LR bbl may have spent its life shooting 44 mags just before the swap.

I don't worry about it being addictive...I don't have to worry about getting hooked....just the fact that we are on the forum is pretty good evidence that we are ALREADY HOOKED.
