What does this meen on a SxS shotgun?

it means the hammer 'springs back' from the fully down position. cock hammer, pull trigger, hammare goes forward and strikes firing pin, hammer 'rebounds' a short distance, this allows the firing pin to come back slightly also so the action/cylinder can be opened.

IN most case it also means the hammer is blocked from accidently hitting the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled back.A safety feature as much as anything.
