Rebarreling Question

I have a 22LR rifle I need to rebarrel. Question? The current barrel is a press fit. My gunsmith says there is enough material in the receiver to thread the receiver...of course the new barrel can be threaded too as it is cuurently not turned down to the press fit diameter. He says that a threaded barrel is better than a press fit barrel...is that true? Or is it just going to cost me more to thread eveything and I will gain nothing but a lighter wallet.

    O.K., it looks like I may get stuck with this Mossberg 800 here on gunbroker that is a basketcase. Assuming that when I get the bolt and receiver checked out, and they are serviceable, I would like to put a reasonably priced new barrel on, because there is a bulge in the present barrel. Any ideas on a reasonably priced barrel? Also, I would like to rebarrel in a different caliber other than .243. I like the .243, but I have a nice 700 in that. Anyway, I was thinking of an old caliber such as 250 Savage of 257 Roberts. Could I do that and use the same bolt? Any ideas which would be the better choice? Of course, if I get lucky and get outbid then I'm off the hook, or if the receiver or bolt is junk, then I'm also off the hook because then I'll just destroy it, and call it a learning experience. Thanks.

    The first question should be:

    "Did you contact the seller to get a clarification on the headspace comment?"

    If you didn't, do so now. Ask the question and get a technical explanation of what he really means and why he wrote the description the way he did. It could be a misunderstanding of terms. You have 3 days left in the auction which is plenty of time to get your ducks in a row to have this thing fixed if necessary and possible. There is no reason to extrapolate as to how to fix it or if it can be fixed before we know what the real problem is or if one exists.

    The .308 barrel is a plus if the whole rifle can be fixed.

    O.K., Nononsense. I asked the seller the question of how he came to the conclusion that the headspace is gone, and also asked if he had a clue as to how the bulge came to be in the barrel. Waiting on a reply. Texas Hunter, you made the comment of Numerich having a .308 barrel for sale. Is that a person or a company. I guess I'm in unfamiliar waters here. Just for the record though. I won't be mad if I get stuck with this gun. Heck, I've made bigger blunders than what we're talking here. I'm just trying to get a feel for what I may or may not be up against. Thanks for the input.

    On the various models of 800's they had a .243 and at least one in .308

    Thanks for the link Texas Hunter. I looked on there, and I found a 22-250 barrel as well as a 350 Rem Mag barrel. I guess the situation doesn't look as bleak as I thought it would be. One more question though. Do all variations of the model 800 take the same barrel. Seems like I seen every model mentioned except the 800SBM?

    Staying in the .308 cartridge group, you might rebarrel to .260 Rem, which will get you something kinda like the .257 Roberts in a short cartridge.

    243, 260, 7mm-08, 308, or 358 will be relatively easy. 22-250 and 250 savage shouldn't be bad either. 257 is likely going to be too long for the magazine.

    Nononsense, I have an answer to a question that I asked the owner of this Mossberg 800. He said a go/no-go guage went in rather easily, and that's how he said the headspace is gone. As far as the bulge in the barrel, he said he has no idea what happened for that to come about. So I guess I'm gonna be in the wait and see mode to see what happens with the auction.

    Good, I'm glad that he got back with you.

    Hopefully that means he knows how to correctly check headspace. But even if the headspace is wrong, we just need to figure out why it's wrong and see if can be fixed. You already have a source for new barrels so that's not an issue and it will take care of the bulge. I guess that it's just wait and see if someone outbids you at the last minute. If not, we'll walk you through the process or you can take it to a gunsmith for a good going over.

    what does "rather easily" mean? That I would want clarification on. If it falls into the chamber with no help,..then yeah thats not good, but if the bolt requires a wee bit of pressure to close on that guage, that's not too bad at all.

    where is the bulge? can the barrel be cut and recrowned behind the bulge and still be long enough to properly burn the charge? if so, you maybe can just set-back the chamber end by a few threads, rechamber, cut and recrown, and you are in business without buying a new barrel at all[;)]

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    i stopped in at a gunsmith today and talked about the Mossberg. They can get a used barrel and receiver as a unit for about $120. I may have to be a little flexible on the caliber though. The guy didn't say where the bulge was, but if it was towards the end, that would be alright. Oh ya. The gunsmith said he doubted whether the bolt and receiver were ruined, but he'd check it out first before ordering a barrel. If I wanted a Douglass barrel, it would be at least $350. We'll just wait and see what happens. Thanks alot for the help. I let you know what happens.
