Looking at first revolvers
Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should look for in a CHEAP first revolver? I've been looking at some people's H&R's and really like the topbreaks, but not sure if there are better deals out there. By cheap I mean like around $150 and under, even something in rough shape that I could fix up would be fun. Thanks

You should be able to find a well used police trade in S&W mod 10 or 15 for that if you really look arround. they are 10x the revolver that the old Top breaks are. The top breaks aren't worth owning to shoot, maybe to collect.

The best deals I have gotten have been on police confiscated pistols. I have bought pistols with minor problems from dealers who have bought large lots at low prices. Several years ago I bought a Colt Offical Police with some rust on it for $75. I bought some 38 S&W's for $15 ea. 0 -

My first revolver was a Ruger .22/.22mag single six 6.5 inch barrel. It is a very good 1st revolver. My 2 cents [8D]

If he buys a good used Smith & Wesson, he won't have any "wait mr psycho, my revolver is having mis-fires..." issues. I bought a near new M-10 for $120.00 and it is truly like new. Its one of the most reliable guns there is.

If you are talking about the H&R 999 in .22LR, they are excellent revolvers. For reasons I don't understand they never got popular enough to make them expensive, but I consider that a plus. I wouldn't consider the H&R 999 for defense though. It's hard to hide and it's a .22.
For what you're looking for, I agree with richbug and Fourth Horseman. A good used S&W K frame. Off hand I can't think of an S&W K frame I don't like. If you are going to use it for CCW, you might even consider an S&W J frame.

With all the police departments getting auto pistol fever, there were a lot of 4-5 inch smith and colts in 38 special and 357 on the used market. Carried a lot, shot little. Some careful shopping, you can find one in good mechanical condition, but probably worn bluing, for $150 or less. Big enough for defense, small enough to carry concealed, accurate enough for target shooting, cheap enough you can still buy ammo, ear muffs, safety glasses, and a basic cleaning kit. I do collect some of the older top break Iver types- but it would not be my first choice for target shooting OR self defense. Just my opinion- others may have others.

I would suggest you go with inexpensive rather than cheap.
If this is your first handgun you should give serious thought to a .22 single action revolver because in order to become a handgun marskman you need to practice, a lot. Even the least expensive .38 target ammo costs 4X more per round than .22 LR. The other advantage of a single action is the time it takes to reload. It tends to give you more patience in making every shot count.
