Arisaka action question....

Thought I'd make a new thread as the last one reached 10 with this question.

It's not normal to cock on open? The trigger pull on this is outstanding. Light and crisp. By cocking on the open, would that mean you can open the bolt and close it and it's ready to go? Because I can do this with a snap cap and I don't have to draw it back and forth. I'm ignorant on this.

    Yes ... since it's a cock on open bolt you need not
    slide the bolt back to complete the cock. I'm not
    sure aboutt the snapcap part - I imagine you can
    just leave it there and not eject it.

    The Arisaka bolt is considered one of the very - if not
    the - strongest military bolts ever made. Someone,
    sometime, progressively fed a Br. Ensfield, a Mauser,
    an 03A3 and an Arisaka rifles hotter reloads until they
    blew up. Last one standing was the Arisaka!

    If it cocks on opening it's been modified. The modification entails building up the cocking ramp of the bolt bu welding and grinding to size.
    That it has a good trigger pull, means it too has been modified or exchanged with a Timney or the like.
    While the Jap wont blow under a heavy Blue Pill load, the headspace will progressively increase under loads in the 50kpsi range.
    Stick to the 42kpsi range the action was designed for.
    These 7.7mm barrels shoot .308 bullets very well.

    My brother and I looked at it today and we both agree that it has been re-barrelled. Can't wait to get it to the range and see what it can do. Thanks for the information all.[8D]

    BTW I slugged it and it's a .308.

    If you're interested in the "blow up tests" referred to, check out Julian Hatchers "Notebook", published in 1947.
    He gives credit largely to cartridge design on the 6.5, semi-rimmed with minimal extractor cut, though he also sites bolt/receiver design and the support it gives to the case.
