Arisaka??

I picked up an Arisaka Type 99 made at the Nagoya Arsenal. Looks to be a series 7, serial number 220XX. It's a very nice Sporterized rifle. It's chambered in 30-06. The barrel is marked 30-06 on the left side. It also has 10-50 on the under side. The rear site is a receiver type marked Lyman 57SME mounted just forward of the bolt. The front is a ramp type dovetail the has a tall flat post. It's attached to the barrel with a tapered ban. The pictures do not do it justice. The "Mum" is in tact and clear. It looks to have a banner from left to right on top of the mum. or maybe it's just the top pedal that doesn't overlap the rest of them.

I'm wanting to know what the value of this rifle is? When I say value I mean as a shooter/custom rifle. Obviously the military collectors auora is gone. I also would like to know what kind of danger if any is associated with this rig. What kind of barrel was installed on this rig? I haven't slugged it but the rifling looks very strong.

    Once sporterized, these rifles are worth exactly what you paid for them.
    The action's a tank, though, and can take a lot of abuse. You'd want to take it to a gunsmith to get the final go-ahead to shoot it.

    Looks like a nice job on the sporterization.

    The disadvantages to sporterizing a military rifle are that it ruins the collector value, and they tend to be quite a bit heavier than an equivalent civilian hunting rifle.

    The advantages (in your case), it is indeed a tank with a virtually unbreakable action, and you'll probably be able to hand it down to your great-great-great-great grandchildren. [:D]

    Looks like a nice job on the sporterizing....and I agree with the Captain on the value.

    it's possible it still has the original barrel, this was an easy converstion. just run a .30/06 reamer into a 7.7mm barrel, they usualy shot quite well.

    I'm assuming that doesn't work quite so well with a chrome-lined bore?
    That's the only disadvantage to my 7.7 sporter, that I can think of.

    If it has the original barrel and you handload use British .303 bullets they are .311 in dia.My Lyman Realoading Book says groove diameters range from .310 to .317.I would suggest you slug the barrel if you're not sure if it's original. Good looking sporter[:)]

    All earlier replies appear right on the money. Years ago Julian Hatcher blew up a number of rifles; 98's , Springfields, etc. and the Arisaka was the last to let go. I have a sporter similar to yours in .257 Roberts that I love, but like your '06 it's worth only what it means to you. Mine was greatly improved by a Timney trigger. Years ago I read that someone had a way of converting the Arisaka to "cock on openning rather than closing, but I don't have any info on that. Maybe someone else does? I've learned to love the cock on close, and with practice I prefer the original safety to the after market trigger option.

    I read an article about this awhile back, the overload used would have grenaded the strongest magnum Mauser action.

    It's not normal to cock on open? The trigger pull on this is outstanding. Light and crisp. By cocking on the open, would that mean you can open the bolt and close it and it's ready to go? Because I can do this with a snap cap and I don't have to draw it back and forth. I'm ignorant on this.
