RIFLE KEYHOLING ??

SHOT A .243 MODEL 7 REM. 18.5 BARREL.AT A 100 YD INDOOR TARGET TARGET 100/95/58 GR.LOADS. NONE FIRED WELL,SOME CUT THE PAPER 1 IN. TEARS.ONLY SOME OF THE 58 GR.LEFT CLEAN HOLES.WHAT CAN BE THE PROBLEM,BAD BARREL?

    The rate of twist might not be fast enough for heavy bullets. I would think that the Model 7 would have a 1 in 10" twist but if'n it has a 1 in 12" twist you'll need to stick to <75gr pills. Hopefully someone will chime in that knows what the twist on that rifle is

    There could be a multitude of issues causing this situation. Now,..if you have encountered "keyholing" I would expect a problem with the rifle. They may shoot bad,..but I have yet to see a bullet from a modern rifle do that without a major flaw in the rifle. Bullets hitting the target sideways at 100yds has nothing to do with bullet weight,..that gun has a serious problem.

    Now, if you shot at a range where the target backstop was shot out, then I can see where the bullet passing through the target which was pasted over the large hole,...ripping the paper on the target. Be sure the bullet is actually destabilized and not just ripping the target paper.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    a 1-9" twist should stabilize more than a 100 gr. bullet. If you look at the holes created by the bullet you should notice if they are clearly round with a thin black ring around them. If the heavy bullets aren't stabilizing you have a problem with your rifle. If the light bullets aren't stabilizing it shouldn't show until past 300 yds.

    I'm going out on a limb here and assuming you used good ammunition. You should be getting 1" groups with that. If the bullets are doing all kinds of funny things then they are not stabilizing and that would be the rifles fault. It is time to take it in and have it looked at to see if there are any irregularities in the barrel.

    Something I didn't mention is that while I have two, I'm not overly fond of ultralight barrels. I'm thinking they are suspect in shooting heavy bullets in that they give a little too much whip when shooting heavy bullets.

THIS IS VERY TRUE, WHILE I'M SURE THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS LIGHTER BARRELS LIKE LIGHTER BULLETS.
