Hi Everyone,
Just signed on this morning. I just aquired a Winchester 30-30 Model 94 with a serial number of: 2874758....
I was looking over the internet trying find out how old this serial number was, year manufactured, etc. Can anyone help me on this?
I also own an AR-15 A-2, but installed a VN era handguard on it, like the one I had back in 1971-75 while in the Air Force. Also I have a Colt 45 Defender which I hand carry here in the state of Louisiana.
My Step-Dad is a retired cop, and has about 35-40 rifles & handguns etc, which were in Katrina down in Slidell, LA I went down after they evacuated and salvaged about 14 rifles, a Ruger Stainless 44 mag, and a Browning 22 Auto. Brought them here with about 15,000 rounds of various calibers of ammo, and was able to save it all. He took all his handguns with him when they left the house before the storm. Anyway this is how I came by the 30-30...A gift...
Appreciate any help ID'ing the serial number above!!

It sort of depends on which version of the 94 you have. Some versions have magazines that hold four rounds, which is good since many states limit capacity to five rounds, allowing you to carry one in the chamber. Other versions with 26 inch barrels and full magazines hold seven rounds and one in the chamber. Best of luck. 0 -

You have your information mixed up just a bit, and I am not aware that Winchester ever specifically made the magazines to comply with a state laws...
The standard Model 1894/94 Carbine holds 7 rounds in the magazine +1 in the chamber... total capacity = 8.
There were a fair number of special order button mag, 2/3 mag, and 1/2 mag Sporting Rilfes and Carbines made, and the cartridge capacity varies depending on the magazine length and the variation.
An original 26" barreled Sporting Rifle (like the 1906 vintage Sporting TD Rifle that I own) holds 9 cartridges in the magazine +1 in the chamber... for a total of 10 (a full half box[^]). I have had my hands on several special order Model 1894 Sporting Rifles with a 30-inch barrel and a full length mag... those hold a total of 12 cartridges. Winchester made a very limited few special order Model 1894s with a 36-inch barrel and full length mag... 14 in the mag +1 in the pipe[:0][^].

With standard Winchester 30-30 ammo, i can only stuff 6 rounds into the tube of my very standard M94 carabine.
Every written source I can find on the subject says six rounds in the mag. Only the "Sporting Rifle, full mag?zine will take 8.

Stuff as many rounds in as it will take them count them as you unload it then you'll know how many it will hold! BERT H is usually correct when it comes to Winchester questions[:D]

that was exactly what I did[:D]and guess what - it took 7 rounds in the tube!! I stand puzzeld and corrected[:I]

There may be a slight difference in the modern made Model 94 magazine capacities versus the pre-WW II made versions... I don't own any Model 94s newer than 1949.
That said, before I wrote my previous reply, I stuffed my 1906 vintage TD Sporting Rifle full... it holds 9 cartridges in the magazine (just like the reference documents that I have state). My 1924 vintage SRC does hold a total of 8 cartridges (7 in the mag), and again, that agrees with the reference books that I have. It is real tight getting the 7th cartridge in the mag tube though (which is why I originally stated 6). However, because something was tickling the back of my memory, I went and looked it up to be sure that what I had originally stated was correct, and discovered that I was mistaken... I retried it, and was able to get the 7th cartridge in the mag tube (had to use another cartridge to push the 7th fully into the tube).

yes the seven'th one goes a little tight, but with another cartridge to push it in with - it works ok.
Well it just makes me like my 94 ewn more!
