30 US 1906 & 03 adapter ???

Picked this up at the swap meet today. I'm wondering if any has used this? If you have what can I expect out of it. I was thinking of using it to sight in my Arisaka with. Of course once I got close I'd change over to the 30-06 stuff and put it out further. It's marked 30 US 1906 & 03 and below that it has .32 COLTS AUTO. My understanding is that these were used to help train with. Can anyone fill me in on this item?

    i personaly do not beleive that you need to carry an anti tank rifle for personal protection.

    it doesn't matter how big your gun is, it's what you do with it when it counts :)

    Hello I think what you have is an adapter that possiable was made by marble . However I don't understand your comment about being able to switch between useing it in an ARISAKA and a 30/06 . unless the arisaka has been rechambered the adapter should head space on the shoulder which is different . A pistol cartridge would not print in the same place on a target as a full power rifle round unless it is at a very short range.

    The bottom primer area is just like a 30-06 snap cap with a larger striking area. There is a spring with a firing pin in the adapter. The firing pin is centered on a plate that tops the adapter just below the side. The .32 is pressed in the top and is held in place by the four sides of the adapter. Kind of like four fingers that you just wiggle the round in. The rest is easy just load it in and squeeze the trigger.

    Haven't done it yet. Was kinda wondering if there is any information on these about safety and reliabilty of 'em? I have chambered it and it seems to fit very nicely. The measurements match a 30-06.

    What you have appears to be a Supplemental Chamber. Winchester made them for the Model 1885 Single Shot rifle, but they were slightly different from the one you have pictured.

    These were known as Auxiliary Cartridges and were made in a number of different calibers at least up to the 1950s.

    As other have mentioned above, these were called Auxiliary Cartridges. They were designed to allow the hunter to have a less powerful cartridge for shooting small game while hunting for large game. I have never heard of of them being used for training either military or civilian. There was an anxiliary cartridge used by the military in the 1903 Hoffer-Thompson version. The barrel was .22 cal with a .30-'06 sized chamber. In this case the auxiliary cartridge was necessary to have the rounds function through the 1903 magazine.
