Nylon cleaning rods worth it?
Like to hear feedback about the value of nylon cleaning rods.

Get a J. Dewey rod. The nylon coating is very hard and will not allow grit to imbed in it. I have about 10 Deweys, they are great rods, and will last you a lifetime.

They are steel rods with a very tough nylon coating, ie, it does not peel off easily like the coatings on some of the low cost cost rods like Clean Bore. My preference is Bore Tech rods, with Deweys in second place, except for hand guns, where Dewey is the only choice. Both have bearing in the grips so the rod rotates with the rifling and you can make a smooth straight stroke from breech to muzzle.
As to value, I like them so much I have about 7 for all the guns I clean.0 -
I think they are nice rods, but don't see much advantage over stainless with a bore guide.

After switching to a vinyl coated cable cleaning system (Otis), I will never go back to a rod. You can pull a lot tighter patch through the barrel than you can push. All cleaning rods would break or bend with the force you can pull a patch through. They are a lot easier and quicker to use as well.

Eric,..a super tight patch is a bit too much. ANY abrasive left in the bore after the solvent patch is run,.. is squeezed against the bore surface under more pressure. Carbon fouling will scratch the metal if it is under pressure (hence the erosion in the throat). I read an artical in, I think it was Precision Shooting magazine a while back that changed my tight patch ideas. I have since gone to a less tight fit with just enough to push the crud out the muzzle.
as far as coated rods goes,..there is NO other way to protect the bore than with a coated rod,..and the bore guide is also VERY important in saving the edge/angle on the rifling lands at the throat. Dewey, and Boar tech are 2 very good rods.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
